True Breakfast Capitol 初早餐 – Memories of Taipei

True love is elusive, but True Breakfast is easy to find. True Breakfast Capitol is an outward facing Taiwanese restaurant at Capitol Singapore (the mall formerly known as Capitol Piazza). The shop used to be a Toast Box outlet and has high visibility with lots of pedestrian traffic between City Hall MRT and Funan Mall.

Taiwanese Cafe at Capitol

The cafe is small but felt reasonably spacious enough for a quick snack or meal. Large glass panels on two sides brightened up the space and the tables are not too near each other. Stepping into a Taiwanese breakfast cafe brought back fond memories of breakfast at Yong He Dou Jiang Taipei some years ago.

This is a suitable place to have breakfast or lunch before after a visit to the nearby tourist attractions such as the National Gallery. There is a view of St Andrews Cathedral just across the road.

True Breakfast Capitol Menu

The True Breakfast Capitol menu is mostly an all day menu that contains familiar Taiwan snacks such as egg omelette 蛋餅 , toasts and pancakes (油餅). The cafe opens from 8am to 7.30pm. A few more substantial dishes are available for lunch starting from 11 am.

Our Taiwanese Brunch at Capitol

Since we were in the zone of brunch we ordered a couple of breakfast items – ham and cheese omelette ($6.60), scallion pancake ($6.50) and a lunch menu item – Taiwanese chicken chop rice ($10.80).

Both the omelette and pancake were enjoyable, going very well with the black coffee that we also ordered. This is a classic Taiwanese breakfast combination.

True Breakfast Capitol review

As for the chicken chop rice, it turned out to be bigger than we expected. This may be enough for lunch for two people with light appetites. It does not appear to be different from a standard chicken chop but the seasoning seems more tasty and the chicken was tender and cooked just right. Not a lot of difference but certainly one which we are happy to return to eat again.

We tried a hot black coffee ($1 when purchased with the omelette) and a cold soybean milk ($3). The soybean was good but the coffee was probably not as good as those in a good local coffee shop. Service was friendly and helpful.
