BHC Chicken Myeongdong Seoul: Korean Fried Chicken Takeaway

BHC Chicken Myeongdong, Seoul is one of the more than two thousand outlets of the most popular fried chicken restaurant in South Korea. Not unexpectedly, it was a full house when we were there. We resorted to Plan B – takeaway Korean fried chicken, but that also entailed a 40 minute wait.

Myeongdong is a place in Seoul that seems to be busy at all times. In the evenings, when the night stalls open for business, it is possibly at its busiest. Fortunately BHC Chicken Myeongdong is located at the fringe of the area and not in the heart of the crowded spaces. It is across the road from the large Lotte Seoul Department Store. If travelling by subway, it is a few minutes walk from Exit 5 of the Euljiro 1-ga Station, Line 2.

BHC Chicken is said to be Korea’s No. 1 chicken brand. It also has  2,177 stores in Korea alone. Internationally, it has outlets in other countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The Myeongdong outlet takes up a few shop units in the same building building. When we decided to buy takeaway instead of dining in, we were directed to another space on level two where takeaway orders are taken.

This is the shop unit where the take-out counter is located. A few tables for dining in are squeezed into this space. A few chairs are placed outside for the takeaway folks after they have placed their orders.

After payment, we received an order confirmation is in the form of a simple handwritten note indicating the estimated collection time and the type of order. The wait time was about 40 minutes. Enough time for us to leave and wander the nearby Myeongdong streets before returning to collect our food.

There is a wide selection of fried chicken on the menu. Here are two pages of the BHC menu. We selected a boneless honey chicken (KRW25,000).

Takeaway Korean Fried Chicken in Seoul

After unpacking our package, this was what out fried chicken order looked like. A box of chicken, a box of pickled radish and chopsticks.

The portion of chicken was rather large. Enough for two people as a light meal.

Accompanying the chicken was a box of pickled radish. These were to be eaten in between bites of chicken to reduce the oiliness / clear the palate. The chicken was very good – tender and moist and yet coated with a crisp exterior. Some parts of the crispness were softened by the sweet honey and that provided some variety in texture.

We picked a boneless style chicken as this is much easier to eat in a hotel room. Plastic gloves are available for diners at BHC chicken outlets and picking up a few also makes eating less messy. Together with a Korean drink from a nearby convenience store, this was a perfect stay at ‘home’ snack, especially when the weather turned unseasonably cold.
