The Canopy Cafe, which was operating at Marina Bay Golf Course, has now opened in Katong Village. It offers a wide selection of reasonably priced one-dish meals and side dishes. Guests can also enjoy desserts, afternoon tea, coffee, or something a little stronger at the new café in Katong V.

Under The Canopy
Many golfers expressed sadness when Marina Bay Golf Course, Singapore’s only 18-hole public golf course, ceased operations last year. Even some non-golfers were disappointed, as that also meant the closure of The Canopy Cafe @ Marina Bay Golf Course. The cafe was known for its splendid view of the Singapore skyline and was a popular spot for tempting local dishes such as Prawn Paste Fried Chicken Wings and Johore Fried Bee Hoon.

The Canopy Cafe has now found a new home – under the canopy of Katong V. While the new location may not offer the same golf course views, it provides the comfort of air-conditioning and easy accessibility by bus and MRT.

The cafe is located in a part of Katong V Shopping Mall that features a distinctive canopy-style roofs with glass panels that let plenty of natural light flood in. The interior of the cafe combines white walls, dark accents and wooden furnishings to create a contemporary look with a relaxed feel.

Menu of The Canopy Cafe
The menu of The Canopy Cafe in Katong V has a long list of one-dish meals, including the popular JB Fried Bee Hoon and Crispy Rice Seafood Porridge. The side dishes on the menu may in fact be more interesting – with options like Fried Lala, Ngoh Hiang and Otak Baguette. There are also desserts and beverages. The cafe also offers kids bento and an afternoon tea set.

Affordable Local Dishes
We visited the new cafe in Katong V and ordered the Pork Chop Rice ($10.90), Mee Goreng ($10.90) and Tahu Goreng ($8.90). We also had Iced Matcha Latte ($6.90). Service charge and GST would be added to the bill.
The waiting time for the dishes ordered was fairly short. The food was nicely plated.
Pork Chop Rice

The Pork Chop Rice was like the typical dish found at local zi char stalls across Singapore. The meat had been marinated with soy sauce, five-spice powder and other seasonings. The pork chops came with a sweet savoury brown sauce poured over the top and a sprinkling of sesame seeds. The meat was tender and easy to cut. A portion of fresh, crunchy cabbage came alongside. It was a nice satisfying meal.

Mee Goreng

The mee goreng was cooked to be a little moist and mildly spicy. The noodles were soft but not soggy, and were coated evenly with a delectable sauce. It was a nice dish, much like what you would find at a good hawker stall or local coffeeshop.

Tahu Goreng

The Tahu Goreng arrived as a tower of tofu cubes covered in a generous helping of reddish-orange sauce. The fried tofu had a nice crispy coating with a smooth, soft inside. Unlike typical versions served with satay or gado-gado sauce, The Canopy Cafe’s version used what tasted more like a Thai-style chilli sauce – hot, tangy and mildly sweet.
We would have liked a bit more of the shredded cucumber and onions that provided a nice crunch to balance the dish. But despite that, it was very enjoyable and easily the standout dish of our meal.

The Iced Matcha Latte met expectations. It was refreshing and provided a contrast to the spicy dishes.
We ordered hor fun to take away. The takeaway box was a small, cute cardboard container that still had “Canopy @ Marina Bay” printed on it.

Zi char meal in contemporary cafe setting
Many cafes mainly serve Western or fusion dishes, often at prices that are on the higher end. The Canopy Cafe in Katong V offers a refreshing alternative, with a wide selection of local dishes. Prices are only slightly higher than those in typical food courts, but at the new cafe in Katong V you enjoy a comfortable space and full restaurant table service. In Katong’s busy dining scene, The Canopy Cafe is still a welcome addition. It offers local food and zi char meals at reasonable prices, all within a pleasant, contemporary cafe setting.
