Sushi Zanmai at i12 Katong

The restaurant is located on the second floor of i12 Katong Mall. It has the look of a contemporary Japanese casual diner. The interior design is rather elaborate. The space is brightly lit, with light wood furniture and clean lines. Seating is comfortable, with enough space between tables. It can accommodate small groups or families with children.

Menu of Sushi Zanmai
Given its name, one might expect a narrow focus on sushi. Sushi Zanmai instead has an extensive menu. It offers assorted sushi, sashimi, rice bowls, udon and soba, grilled items, tempura, and an assortment of salad and side dishes. Prices fall in the mid-range, making it accessible for families and for those looking for a casual dinner option.

Dinner at Sushi Zanmai
We visited Sushi Zanmai at i12 Katong and ordered a few items from various sections of the menu.

The sashimi platter Hama Sashimi Mori ($19.80) came first. The slices of fish laid on a bed of ice were visibly thicker than usual. Tuna, salmon, and yellowtail were firm and fresh. It was a very good start to our meal.

The California Roll ($10.80) was served next. The dish showed attention to small details. Every element combined well. It looked good and was delicious.

The Pork Belly Donburi ($12.80) was an excellent dish that we would gladly order again. The portion was generous, with slow-cooked slices of pork belly, mushrooms, a soft-cooked egg, and a light sauce served over rice. The balance of textures and flavours was pleasing, and the meat was tender. Overall, it was a hearty and thoroughly enjoyable dish.

We were already rather full when the Tempura Soba ($10.80) and Gyu Don ($9.80) were served. The tempura was light and not oily, while the soba was somewhat softer than preferred. The Gyu Don was a comforting dish. We would say both dishes were fairly average, yet still better than what one would usually expect at that price point in a restaurant in Singapore

We also had a bowl of Hokkaido Red Bean Soup ($2.80) to round off our meal. Refillable Ice Green Tea was $1.20 per person.
