Foong Kee Roast Meat : From Keong Saik to Commonwealth Crescent Market

Foong Kee Traditional Charcoal Roaster is a famous roast meat restaurant that used to operate at a coffee shop along Keong Saik Road. Sometime in early 2021, it closed down. It resurrected about one year later at 31 Commonwealth Crescent Market and Food Centre. We are surprised that it took us 3 years to finally pay them a visit. Better late than never, I guess.

Char Siew Rice and Roast Duck at Commonwealth Crescent Market

We visited Foong Kee Coffee Shop at Keong Saik in 2019. Their Cantonese style char siew, roast meat and roast duck were said to be some of the best in Singapore. One of the main takeaways from our lunch that day was that the wanton char siew noodles were better than the char siew rice. We thought that the noodles and dumplings were outstanding.

Unfortunately, its new premises at Commonwealth Crescent are much smaller and so the food options are limited to rice dishes only. So it was a matter of choosing which meat to go with the rice. We decided to have a standard char siew rice ($4.50) and a roast duck drumstick rice ($8).

This is a picture of our simple lunch at Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre which is located on the second level (above the wet market on the ground floor).

Our thoughts about the char siew rice were similar to those we had on our visit to their previous location at Keong Saik. The taste and flavour of the char siew was good. We like the charred bits and the taste of the sauce. But the pork had a large proportion of fatty and chewy bits. The last time, there were the noodles and dumplings to save the day. This time it was the roast duck.

We enjoyed the roast duck much more than the char siew. The doneness of the duck was perfect – with the skin crisp golden brown and the meat moist and juicy. The bird had enough fat but not too oily. We understood why the two customers ahead of us were da-paoing whole ducks.
