Osaka Ohsho has five restaurants in Singapore. Today we tried out the one at Westgate Shopping Mall. Located on the third floor, it is a large restaurant with an impressive frontage. This Japanese restaurant is apparently known for its fried dumplings – gyoza. We liked the layout of this restaurant. A large part of the seating is in the form of booth seats which provide patrons with a sense of privacy in the large dining space.
The menu, which came both in hard copy and electronic form viewed on an iPad basically had three sections – a la carte, set meals and weekday lunch meals ($9.90 to $14). Ordering was quick and fuss free using the iPad.
We ordered two set meals, the gyokai ramen and fried chicken (a weekday lunch meal at $9.90) and a mabo eggplant set ($13.90). The ramen was smooth and came in a very light broth. The egg and the pork slices were quite plain. The fried chicken pieces were very nicely done with a crisp outer skin while maintaining a moist flavourful interior. The meal came with a glass of houji tea.
The other set meal turned out to be more interesting. The gyoza was excellent and we could understand why this dish is the flag bearer of this restaurant. The fillings of minced pork and chopped cabbage and ginger were well seasoned and the vegetables provide a bit of crunch. The skin was translucent and provided a nice bite. They were all evenly fried to a nice shade of brown. The mabo eggplant is a recommended dish particularly if you are having rice. The sweetish soy sauce provides a satisfying taste to the plump slices of stir-fried eggplant. Incidentally, the restaurant also prides itself on the high quality of rice used. The egg soup which completed this meal was however plain and forgettable.
The gyoza here is one of the best we have tasted in Singapore and any of the set meals here which includes gyoza is worth trying. However, if you are thinking of ramen, we think there are many better options elsewhere in Westgate.
