(October 2015 update – the set lunch menus had been changed since our visit. We have a picture of the Oct 2015 menu at the end of this post).
Located on a prime spot on the ground floor of Westgate, Zaffron Kitchen is an impressive restaurant serving North and South Indian cuisine. It is situated along the main thoroughfare that runs through the mall and right in front of the pathway that leads to the neighbouring Jem mall. At lunchtime, Zaffron offers some reasonably prized and tasty set lunches. We were there to try them recently.
The restaurant looks very good both from the exterior and inside. The high ceiling makes the place feel airy and the full glass windows bathe the place in indirect natural light. Bright but not sunny – perfect for our type of weather. A large bar counter dominates the dining area as you enter. The floor is laid with geometric tiles in earthly tones lending a sense of warmth to the place.
The lunch sets range from $12.90 for a Curry Chicken Prata set to a Mutton Rogan Josh set ($16.90). We ordered the latter and a Tandoori Naan set ($14.90). The ordering system using an iPad was simple and convenient.
Both sets are served with plain naan, biryani rice, papadum and raita (a yogurt based condiment). The rogan josh was a strong lamb curry dish. You can sense the numerous spices and herbs that had gone into this dish. It is mildly spicy. A very good curry to go with the rice and naan if you like full-bodied, robust flavours.
The tandoori set has the same side dishes as the rogan dosh. Instead of the lamb curry, you get two pieces of tandoori chicken and a portion of curry chicken gravy. The curry is also mildly spicy which is good because you can get to taste its flavours. It is a lighter curry than the lamb and is likely to find favour with a wider audience. The tandoori chicken were tender. Slightly dry but quite acceptable.
As part of the meal, you get a drink as well. We had the tea halia (ginger tea) and we highly recommend it. It is prepared and served with sugar. If you (like us) prefer the tea with less or no sugar, you can enter your preference into the iPad as part of the order.
