There are not many restaurants serving Mexican Food in Singapore. Which is why we were happy to see Guzman Y Gomez set up an outlet in Star Vista, Buona Vista. According to their website, Guzman Y Gomez was founded in 2006 and “was named to honour old friends and created to introduce Mexican food and Latin culture to the world”. They have three outlets in Singapore – Asia Square Tower 2 and Chevron House. The outlet at Star Vista is their third.
Guzman Y Gomez @ Star Vista has two sections. The indoor half houses the service areas and a few tables. The other half is in a sheltered but non-airconditioned patio across the corridor. In the cool December weather of Singapore, the patio is the nicer place as the indoor area has too many things going on. Ordering and payments are made at the counter like in a fast food restaurant. Drinks are dispensed immediately and the food will be served to you at your table.
There are four choices of Mexican food available at Guzman Y Gomez. Burritos, tacos, nachos and quesadillas. From our quick read of the menu, we believe that the main differences are the type of wrap used and the toppings. A common list containing 7 types of fillings is available. A picture of part of the menu is shown below.
I decided to try the quesadillas ($8.50 for 2; $10.90 for 3). The economist in me decided that the per unit cost for 3 pieces was lower and so I ordered the 3-piece. You can get to choose different fillings for each one and so I opted for spicy grilled steak, slow roasted pork and slow roasted beef. To complete the meal I also had a side of guacamole ($2) and a Jarritos Mexican Cola ($4).
As you can see from the photos, the quesadillas looked very good. I also liked the packaging. Just simple wrapping paper, but the print made the food pop up. Taste-wise, they were very delicious. With all the sauces and toppings, each of them tasted quite similar. The steak filling was the best as I could taste the individual pieces of beef. The level of spiciness was very low, but that can be tuned up by adding on the spicy sauces available. I would recommend using some of that sauce.
The guacamole was creamy and tasty. I could eat a big bowl of that. The Mexican cola was something I just had to try even though I am not a fan of sweetened drinks. The label on the bottle claims that the sweetness comes from 100% sugar. The main difference I could detect was that the sweetness was more rounded and not as sharp as a Coke, for example. The amount of fizziness is also less. Not bad, but still very sweet and not something I would repeat order.
Overall, it was good to have more choices of Mexican Food in Singapore, especially here in the West side of Singapore. The food at Guzman Y Gomez was good. But the portions are quite small.
