Best roast duck in Singapore from Jiu Jiang Shao La 九江烧腊

We had always thought that Jiu Jiang Shao La serves the best roast duck in Singapore. It is a roast meat stall in the Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre which we had previously written about in general. They are a stall that regularly attracts a long queue of char siew and roast duck fans. We recently bought their roast duck and were blown away by the taste.  The best roast duck in Singapore deserves a story of its own (and better pictures).

The Jiu Jiang Shao La stall has returned to Ghim Moh market after the new market was rebuilt and reopened earlier this year. We stood in line to wait for our turn to order some duck from this famous stall.  A whole duck costs $32 and a half duck $16.  A portion of rice costs 30 cents.  We ordered a half duck and some rice for takeaway.

Here are pictures of what we believe is the best roast duck in Singapore.  The skin is taut and crisp.  The meat is moist and soft. The duck flavour is present but not gamey. Some dark gravy is provided to go with the duck, but we left the sauce alone. There was enough savoury taste from the marination. Eating it ‘neat’ without any added sauce, but with the slightest dip into the provided chilli sauce is our preferred method of eating this duck.  Do notice the clean-cut, straight edges of each piece.  No jagged, untidy pieces on this duck.

There are many types of roast duck choices in Singapore, including those in expensive restaurants that cost more than this. But we always return to Ghim Moh market for this roast duck when we just want a good, straight-forward duck dish.  Best eaten with fluffy steamed rice. Better still with a bottle of medium-bodied red wine that helps to even out the oiliness from the duck fat.

The half duck from Ghim Moh market is enough for a meal for three persons. The cost per person is therefore less than $6 for this lunch of wonderful duck and rice.  Which makes this one of the best value meals in the most expensive city in the world.
