Hana Restaurant – Affordable Japanese Set Lunch in Orchard

Hana Restaurant is a Japanese eatery in Forum The Shopping Mall. It offers affordable set lunches, omakase dinners, shabu shabu buffets and various other specials as well as a comprehensive à la carte menu. It is suitable for quick meals, long lunches with a group, family dinners or after work drinks.

Hana Restaurant is owned by the same people who are responsible for The Benjamins (known for its over the top milk shakes) located just 2 doors away. Hana looks attractive. A modern open bar dominates the dining area. The contemporary furniture does not look very Japanese. However, cherry blossom, paper lanterns, carps and drums of sake more than confirm that it is a Japanese restaurant.

Sarada, Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura, Nabe and Donburi are some of the wide range of Japanese dishes available. Notable dishes include sashimi with special pink chirashi rice, lobster fried rice, truffle chawanmushi, yellowtail cheek and wagyu beef sukiyaki. If it is too hard to choose from such a wide variety of dishes, you can just leave it to the chef. Hana has omakase dinner deals on different days of the week; with prices starting from $30++. During lunch time there are affordable rice bowls and sets available.

I visited Hana Restaurant for lunch and decided on their Tori Teyaki Set ($24).  GST & Serive Charge would be added to the bill. The service was courteous and efficient.

A small dish of appetizer was served while the main meal was being prepared. The set meal was attractively presented in a black lacquer serving tray. The meal consisted of salad, miso soup, California maki, hot udon and grilled teriyaki chicken.

The salad looked quite plain and uninteresting. However, like clothes make the man, dressing make the salad. I am not sure what was Hana’s dressing but it certainly made the salad delicious. The California maki with its sunny disposition was the most photogenic. It was not all looks without substance. It had good taste and texture.

The grilled teriyaki chicken consisted mainly of thigh meat filleted. The teriyaki sauce coated the chicken nicely. The skin had a nice smokey taste. On the whole, quite enjoyable.

The dessert of the day was three small pieces of rock melon. Quite an underwhelming way to round off a nice enjoyable meal. Perhaps it is their way to tempt you to go over to The Benjamins to indulge in some serious desserts.

Hana Restaurant is a decent value-for-money Japanese restaurant in Orchard Road. It has a pleasant setting and a wide range of dishes. The rice bowls and set lunches are very affordable. The quality of the food was not bad. We would go back there sometime to try their omakase dinners.
