The Fabulous Baker Boy Cafe at River Valley (Moved)

A long time ago when policemen wore shorts, there was a public swimming pool at the foothills of Fort Canning along River Valley Road. It is no longer there. The only link to the past is one of the buildings in the RV Swimming Complex which was fortunately saved and is now occupied by The Fabulous Baker Boy restaurant. Nearby, there was the National Theatre and, more importantly, the Van Kleef Aquarium where aquatic critters, ranging from nurse sharks from the oceans and piranhas from the Amazon could be viewed for a small fee. All those are now gone. Some construction work (MRT?) is taking place on the theatre and the aquarium locations, the pool is a patch of grass.

Somehow, old preserved buildings always seem to look inviting. Even one that is just in the shape of a rectangular box. The Fabulous Baker Boy cafe occupies this box. The interior is as simple as the exterior but it all works together. Even Ikea stools look good in this setting.  We also saw a quotation of Julia Child on the wall that we agree with.

Here are pictures of the Fabulous Baker Boy Menu. The FabMenu contains the usual cafe food suspects. The main attraction here seems to be the fabulous cakes. There was a whole wall of them. Much has been written about these cakes and so we decided to be different and ordered some waffles instead.

We decided on the waffles with very bery nice toppings ($15) and coffee (about $5 each).

Unlike other places which serve their waffles decorated with flowers in geometric precision, the waffles at this Fab cafe was quite randomly presented. The mix of berries and ice-cream provided a pleasing blend of sweet and sour tastes. The waffles was quite well cooked. The outer skin was nice and crisp but the insides could have been fluffier.

Overall, the Fabulous Baker Boy cafe at Fort Canning is a very simple yet pleasant space. Its remote location, not connected to anywhere directly gives it a charming atmosphere. The nearest place to park is either at Liang Court which has an overhead bridge connection or at Clarke Quay which is nearer but without a controlled road crossing.  There is some surface parking off Clemenceau Avenue.
