Poke bowl stop at Katto restaurant, Fusionopolis

Katto is a new restaurant tucked away in a corner of the Galaxis Building in Fusionopolis, One North Singapore. They serve “poke bowls” which are bowls of rice topped with raw fish and salad, except that here at Katto, they serve them in disposable paper boxes.  Poke bowls have nothing to do with pokemons. They are a type of dish that originated in Hawaii. Rather than try to provide you with more information on these healthy meals in a bowl, we think the food experts will do a better job –  see this article in the Huffington Post.

Katto occupies a small space, half of which is taken up by the food preparation and service areas. The other half seats about 20. We suspect the poke boxes would be convenient takeaway meals for the multitude of office workers in the One North buildings.

Ordering at Katto was straightforward. The sashimi bowls come in two sizes that cost $12.90 and $7.90 respectively. The only cooked meat option is the yakitori-style chicken with leek and onsen egg that cost $8.90 each.  We decided on a regular poke bowl and a yakitori chicken  dish.

For the regular poke bowl we get to choose two types of raw fish and two types of vegetable toppings. There were about three or four flavours of raw salmon and two types of raw tuna to choose from. We selected a spicy favoured salmon and a tuna topping. For vegetables, we selected cherry tomatoes and mixed seaweed.

We would have preferred more cooked food options, but the yakitori chicken was the only thing available. Our chicken dish came with a salad base, grilled chicken, onset egg and a choice of vegetables.  We selected the edamame beans.

Here are our two boxes of poke bowls. They looked and tasted healthy. The raw fish was nicely flavoured. The spicy salmon was interesting but we liked the yakitori chicken  better. Katto is located right across the corridor from the Bread Yard cafe, which had the most interesting chocolate pistachio tart.  Read about it in our next post.
