We can hardly think of a better food and drink pairing than coffee and bread. I am sure many others in Singapore have the same fondness for the combination as the toasted kaya bread and coffee places are often packed at all hours of the day. We were at The Central recently and decided to try the bread at Barcook Bakery.
Although baking bread for sale is their main business at Barcook, they have some tables for dining in. Here are some pictures of the bread items on display including their famous raisin cream cheese bun which we cannot resist. We also picked up an almond and choc bun.
Barcook is really a no-frills place to eat and drink. The breads were served in their individual plastic bags. The coffee was not bad, not much different from those of the local coffee chains. Coffee with milk was $1.60 and black coffee was $1.50.
This is the almond and choc bun ($1.80). It is quite a large bun – around 15 cm long. But because it is very light, it can easily be consumed by a person as a snack. The almond crumbs and chocolate bits provided some highlight, but the best part was the bread itself. Light, yet with some resistance to the bite.
This is their famous raisin cream cheese bread ($1.60). The same nice chewy bread encases a soft runny core of cream cheese. The cheese flavour is extremely mild. The cream is more sweet than cheese, which could explain its popularity. This is a small bun. Each person should have two to be satisfied.
It is nice to have a low-cost option when looking for a place to have a snack and coffee. The total cost of our entire coffee break could be less than a slice of cake at a high-end patisserie. Whether it is sipping coffee made from exotic beans in a posh cafe or eating buns out of plastic bags, the most important thing when having bread and coffee is sharing them with good company. With the right company, it matters not whether the bread is served in plastic bags or on the finest china.
