The Autobus Cafe is a new restaurant in OUE Downtown Gallery that also sells high-end bicycles and associated peripherals. The ground floor cafe is located at the junction of Shenton Way and Maxwell Road. There are attractive bicycle racks outside. Cyclists can park and eat very conveniently at The Autobus cafe. We were there for brunch on the weekend and quite a few tables around us were occupied by folks suited up with flashy and very tight lycra cycling gear.
As can be expected of a cafe targeted at the cycling enthusiast, the decor of The Autobus Cafe is informal and relaxed. There is a mix of normal tables and sofa seating. According my quick internet search, the autobus is a cycling term given to the group of cyclists who form a large group behind the leading group in a race. It seems that with the chance of winning remote, the mood in the autobus has a greater sense of camaraderie than in the leading pack.
The Autobus Cafe Menu
Here are pictures of The Autobus Cafe menu for weekend brunch and drinks. It contains the usual cafe standards like eggs, toasts and burgers. We had the full breakfast ($18), jamon on toast ($16), pulled pork burger ($18) and waffle maffle with ice-cream ($12 + $2).
The Autobus Cafe full breakfast and pulled pork burger were the best dishes of the day. The full breakfast was a large platter containing two eggs on toast, mushrooms, sausage, hash brown and salad. The taste of everything was pretty good.
The jamon on toast was the least favoured dish of the day. Quite a lot of cheese was included inside the pieces of bread. The pieces of jamon were very small and their taste was over powered by the cheese.
The waffles maffles did give a good impression with its good looks. But the waffles was soft and cold. The best bits were the ice cream and the fruits and nuts.
Overall, The Autobus Cafe looked like an interesting place with impressive looking bicycles displayed throughout the place. We had mixed feelings about the food. The coffee ($5 each) was very good. Another positive thing is that the prices indicated on the menu included GST and no service charge was added.
