Wan He Lou (萬合樓) is a small Chinese restaurant that is famous for its Original Signature Lobster Porridge. Located in a brightly coloured shophouse on Maude Road, the restaurant helmed by award-winning Chef Lau Siaw Dee offers Teochew style porridge with lobster roe and a range of tze cha style dishes.
Wan He Lou (萬合樓) Chinese Restaurant looks like a typical casual Chinese eatery. The decor is plain except for a few colourful lanterns and many photographs of food and celebrities on the wall. There are tables of different sizes and they are placed reasonably far apart.
Menu of Wan He Lou (萬合樓)
According Wan He Lou’s website, Chef Lau was out on a routine diving “trip with his friends when he caught a lobster and decided to cook it for dinner. As they were on an isolated island, he could only find rice from the locals so he decided to make porridge using seawater and lobster. The fresh sea flavours of the lobster worked so well with the porridge that Chef Dee continued to experiment and refine the dish after he had gone home” and that “was how 萬合樓 (Wàn Hé Lóu) signature dish – the award winning Lobster Porridge was born”.
There is a special Lobster Porridge Set Menu for $88. The lobster porridge is also on the a la carte menu.
The menu of Wan He Lou also has a wide variety of dishes ranging from seafood to poultry including smoked duck, seafood pot stickers and even crocodile soup. Below are photos of random pages of the menu.
Lobster Porridge for Lunch
We ordered the Lobster Porridge ($31.90) and Asparagus ($9.90) for lunch. GST & service charge would be added to the bill.
A huge pot of porridge arrived not long after our order was taken. The pot of Teochew style porridge, with loose rice grains, would probably be enough for up to 4 persons. The broth which was enhanced with lobster roe had a pale amber hue. The server scooped up the halved lobster for each of us. The lobster meat was cooked just right. The best thing about the dish was actually the rich tasty broth. The flavours were intense without being overwhelming.
The lightly cooked asparagus spears had a good bite and were quite tasty. The simple dish went well with the lobster porridge.
We enjoyed our simple lunch of lobster porridge at Wan He Lou. The dining space was pleasant and the service was friendly. The food was good and the prices were reasonable. We would happily return to Wan He Lou the next time we feel like having lobster porridge.
