Breakfast in Singapore today often means bread and eggs; and variety may just mean different types of bread spread or eggs done in different ways. However, breakfast in Singapore need not be the same old thing each morning. If you are having breakfast in Katong, try curry puffs at Soon Soon Huat. They open early and they also have yam cake, nasi lemak and other local breakfast fare.
Soon Soon Huat multilayered curry puff is a rather unique Singapore snack. It was apparently a creation of an old Teochew lady who was selling deep-fried spring rolls and soon kueh in Chai Chee. She decided to deep fry the soon kueh with different filling and thus came up with the crispy curry puff with spiral seashell skin.
Soon Soon Huat Crispy Curry Puff now occupies a shophouse along East Coast Road. It also has an outlet in Dunman Food Centre (#01-07).
Soon Soon Huat in Katong sells a variety of curry puffs as well as other items such as deep-fried spring rolls, fried chicken wings, fish balls and sesame balls.
Besides the items in the display cabinets, there are local delights listed on the menu. They also offer breakfast sets and curry puff sets. The prices are lower than the typical food court prices.
We had breakfast in Katong Soon Soon Huat on a weekend. The sitting area is air-conditioned. The furnishing is functional but the tables are quite well spaced out.
We ordered a Curry Puff with Teh Set ($2.80), a Chee Cheong Fun ($2) and a cup of Kopi O ($1.20).
The chicken potato curry puff was delicious. The curry puffs at Soon Soon Huat are hand-made and freshly prepared in batches and served piping hot. The deep fried skin is flaky crisp, thin and airy. There is a generous amount of moist filling in each curry puff.
The chee cheong fun at Soon Soon Huat was fairly ordinary.
We also bought sardine puffs and green bean sesame balls and peanut sesame balls to take home. They were all very good.
If you are thinking of breakfast in Katong and want something other than bread and eggs, give Soon Soon Huat a try. Their crispy curry puffs are delicious. If you really must have eggs and toast, they have a breakfast set for you too.
