Tiann’s Bakery Cafe – Gluten-free and sugarless in Tiong Bahru

Tiann’s Bakery and Cafe is a modern cafe situated along Seng Poh Road in Tiong Bahru, one of the best food enclaves in Singapore. Tiann’s is a place for healthy eating.  Gluten free, no additives, no added refined sugar, no wheat, no trans fat etc. They also have no wifi, so that diners can “enjoy your 100% real good company or say hi to the good looking stranger”. Across the road from Tiann’s Bakery is the famous Tiong Bahru market which boasts a food centre with many food stalls which produce good food but with less emphasis on healthy eating.  We thought that we should eat on the healthy side for a change.

The interior of Tiann’s Bakery cafe is neat and clean. The sunlit part at the back is quite attractive. Seating options are stools at the small tables or benches at the communal tables.

Ordering was done at the counter and the food was served to us at the table. The signs on the wall indicate the daily specials and, more importantly what they do not serve.

Tiann’s Bakery cafe menu

Here are pictures of the Tiann’s Bakery cafe menu. We decided to go for two items that looked rather healthy – the Tiann’s Waffles with two toppings – scrambled eggs and AOP French butter ($16) and Grandma’s Bibimbap ($13).

A stern sign on the table seemed quite effective. Everyone we observed that day, including ourselves, dutifully cleared up before leaving the table. Perhaps they should use this over at the Tiong Bahru food centre.

The food was served in paper boxes.  Grandma’s Bibimbap was a dome of Japanese rice topped with vegetables, kimchi and Korean chilli paste. It was a nice tasting simple rice dish. Most of the flavour came from the kimchi and the chilli paste, so it had a distinct Korean feel. I could not help doing some mental sums comparing this with the humble economical rice (chye png) options across the road and the relative prices.

The waffles and scrambled eggs were very plain in taste. We carefully separated the two halves as we were not sure that syrup and eggs would combine well.

The coffee, like the food, was average in taste. We took comfort from the fact that we were consuming clean healthy food without the artificial (and presumably) harmful stuff.
