The cafe formerly known as Benjamin Browns at the Forum The Shopping Mall is now known simply as The Benjamins. Our last visit was in 2014 (read our post here). It was a demure country style cafe at that time. It is now sports a more edgy and industrial look. More importantly, they have come up with some creative dessert options. There are many sweet temptations. With the recent emphasis on reducing sugar (see ST article MOH wants public consultation on whether Singapore should ban or tax high-sugar drinks), we felt slightly guilt-ridden after trying their sweet creations. Sweet dreams are made of these or are they a diabetic nightmare?
Sweet Temptations
Cakes and other pasteries were on display in the chiller. Large posters showing off their Lux Shakes will surely tempt those with a sweet tooth. Here are some pages from the Benjamins’ menu with regular food and even more dessert options.
The Nutella Banana ($16) is a jar containing vanilla milkshake and lots of toppings. The milkshake itself is quite normal. What makes this different are the biscuits, wafers and banana slices placed on top. Some pretzels were stuck to the jar with chocolate. Interesting, over-the-top and probably contains enough calories to max out my daily food quota. But we were expecting something unusual in taste and it was not to be. Just sweetness and more sweetness.
The caramel toast ($6.90) was something more interesting and unusual. It looks like a Japanese dessert with red beans but was just toasted bread with the ‘pearls’ usually used in Taiwanese bubble tea drinks. It was also not exceedingly sweet.
The beauty queen at The Benjamins cafe has to be the Messy Marble latte ($5.90). The cup of milk transforms into a marble-like fluid when the flavoured tea or coffee is poured in. The cup overflows to great effect.
