Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle

When Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle can be found from Marine Terrace and Bugis to Bukit Panjang and West Coast and there are stalls with confusingly similar names, the original stall must be or have been very popular. The much sought-after Tanjong Rhu wanton noodles were originally sold in a coffee shop in Block 7 Jalan Batu; the same coffee shop where the famous Tanjong Rhu Pau stall is still located. The Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodles stall is now in the Jalan Batu Market & Food Centre. It now has branches in many parts of Singapore and you can even order it online.

Jalan Batu Market & Food Centre

Jalan Batu Market & Food Centre is located in Block 4A Jalan Batu, just opposite the Goodman Arts Centre. It is one of those small early generation food centres with only about over 30 cooked food stalls. There are two stalls in the food centre selling Tanjong Rhu wanton noodles. There is a “Kim Kee Tanjong Rhu Wanton Mee” and there is the “Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle 丹戎禺云吞面” at Stall #01-35.

We visited Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle at Stall #01-35. It sells wanton noodle and dumpling noodle. There is no choice of noodles – only mee kia – but there are options when it comes to the sauces. The prices range from $3 to $4.

Wanton Noodle & Dumpling Noodle

We ordered a Wanton Noodle Dry with Chilli ($3 regular or $4 big) and a Dumpling Noodle Dry with Black Chilli ($3.50).

The portions were quite generous. The noodles were very good – thin and cooked just right to have that springiness which we liked.

The Wanton Noodle came with a bowl of soup with small boiled wantons that had smooth, thin skins. The noodles were topped with some vegetables, crispy deep-fried wantons and thin slices of lean char siew. The chili was quite spicy. It was a very enjoyable bowl of noodles.

Dumpling Noodle Dry

The Dumpling Noodle was served with 3 large dumplings in a bowl of soup. The noodles were topped with greens. The black chilli sauce was a combination of chilli sauce and black soy sauce. It had quite a kick. The dumplings with minced meat and prawns had chunky and crunchy bits. We liked the texture and the taste.

Cheap and Good

We would say that both the wanton noodles and dumpling noodles of Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle stall in Jalan Batu would be among the best we had tried in Singapore. The rather dingy dining environment aside, there was nothing we did not like about our simple noodle meal in Tanjong Rhu. It was really cheap and good food from an unpretentious food stall that is simply known as Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle.

  1. I often go to the nearby playground with my children. Then almost always had lunch at McDonald’s… I’ll try this stall next time! Thank you for useful information as always.
