Tea Tree Cafe Signature Bowl – $2.90 can buy happiness (for a while)

We were doing a walkabout of Great World City to discover what were the changes being made to the shopping mall after our lunch at the new restaurant Four Seas Grilled Fish that we wrote about recently. This was how we came across the Tea Tree Cafe at Great World City. It is situated right next to the McDonalds and McCafe restaurants.

I believe that the Tea Tree Cafe kiosk used to be occupied by Auntie Anne’s. We loved their pretzels which go well with a strong cup of coffee from McCafe next to it.

For a small kiosk, the two ladies manning the place at Tea Tree Cafe sure can prepare a lot of different drinks and desserts. As their name suggests, there is a wide range of teas – classic teas, milk teas, fruity teas etc. In addition, there is a range of hot traditional desserts – sweet potato soup, black glutinous rice, almond cream etc. They are priced from $2.30 to $4. With the 1 for 1 offer, you can see why we were tempted.

Our resistance finally broke when we saw this poster of a lovely dessert that costs $2.90. This, we have to try. We ordered the Signature Dessert Bowl ($2.90 for regular size), but not before checking that the real thing was going to look like the one in the picture. The nice lady behind counter said “I’ll try”. She eventually did a very good job.

In the end, the we were impressed by the final product. It really looked like the one in the poster, although we did not take a dramatic shot of pouring milk on the the dessert. There are two bases for this dessert – pudding or grass jelly. We opted for the later. The chin chow provided a lightly flavoured base for the topping of red beans, chewy balls, yam and sweet potato. Essentially, all the things that we like.

The regular bowl was big enough to be shared by two people. The Tea Tree Cafe signature bowl was sweet but not too sweet, although we would probably ask for slightly less sweetness in the future. Like the pretzel from Auntie Anne’s, this dessert bowl also goes well with a cup of coffee from McCafe.

We thought that the $2.90 was well spent on this dessert after our fishy lunch. It brought us some happiness as we continued our walk around Great World City.
