Bistro du Vin is a restaurant in Shaw Centre is a place we often go to for a pleasant set lunch at Orchard Road. It is smallish place with quite a realistic French bistro ambience. They offer a choice of two or three course set lunches. The former costs more than three times the $10 Japanese set lunch that we had recently at the other end of Orchard Road (read post). Is the $34++ French bistro lunch thrice the enjoyment?
For more pictures and restaurant information on Bistro du Vin, you can refer to our post on our visit right after their major renovations in 2017. Much has remained the same, except that prices seem to have gone up from $29++ to $34 for the two course set lunch menu on week days. The 3-course now costs $40++ (up from $35++). The menu at Bistro du Vin changes once in a while, but their focus is still on classic French dishes. Here is a picture of the Bistro du Vin Set Lunch menu (May 2019) and a page from the wine list.
We had a carafe of Sancerre ($33). We find that a carafe of wine is just right for two. It holds about two glasses per person. Enough for a light lunch and not too much to get one in trouble with the law.
Entrée
Our choices for entrée were the Pan-Seared Foie Gras (picture above) and Classic Ouef Meurette with croutons and bacon (picture below). The foie gras is a favourite of ours at Bistro du Vin and it did not disappoint that day. A $5 additional charge was required for this but it was well worth it.
According to Wikipedia, “Oeufs en meurette are a traditional dish from Burgundian cuisine based on poached eggs and meurette sauce or bourguignon sauce”. The Ouef Meurette was a simple but very tasty dish. It is a dish that calls to be eaten with plain bread. The chunks of bacon, the delicious sauce and runny yolk are the perfect accompaniment with bread.
Main Courses
For our main course we selected the Grilled Provencal Pork Ribs (above picture) and Grilled Golden Snapper (picture below). By comparison with the starters, the main courses were more substantial and predictable. There were no surprises here. Just well executed plates of meat and fish.
Is the $34 set lunch at Orchard Road three times better than the $10 lunch? It depends on the circumstances. If one is in a hurry and lunch mostly for sustenance, then, no the $10 lunch will do just fine. But if one has two hours and good company, the $34++ lunch does bring thrice more pleasure than the $10 lunch. Both are value for money lunches on Orchard Road, Singapore but for different situations.
