Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice restaurant at United Square is a famous and popular place. The Hainanese chicken rice needs no introduction. But it is not only the chicken rice that brings us there. There are many items in the menu that are just as good.
The Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice restaurant at United Square is situated on the ground floor. There is a direct access from the street. Which makes it a convenient place to order take away. Call them in advance and drive by to pick it up without having to park the car. The restaurant itself is simple with not much in terms of aesthetics. But the customers are a practical lot. It is busy during lunchtime and on weekends.
Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice Menu
Apart from chicken rice, the Wee Nam Kee menu is quite extensive. There are many cooked food items in the menu as well. It is like a tze char restaurant that specialises in chicken rice. Here are some sample pages from the menu.
We ordered individual portions of chicken rice and an assortment of other dishes.
The drumstick rice ($5.30) would be what I would order if I were eating alone. It is slightly more expensive than a standard individual order of chicken rice ($4.80) but with this, we are certain of which part of the chicken we are getting. We decided to have the drumstick rice set ($7.80) that day. For the extra $2.50, diners can opt to have a dumpling soup or a side of vegetables. We love the WNK dumplings, so it was an easy decision to make.
The drumstick portion is quite sufficient for one person. It is served separate from the rice. We opted for the roasted chicken (other options are steamed or soya sauce). The skin had a nice roasted flavour and the meat was succulent. It was better than the last time I tried it.
The rice is as important as the chicken. In the case of Wee Nam Kee, the rice was the star. Richly flavoured and fluffy, we could eat the rice by itself.
It was good to have our individual bowls of dumpling soup so that we won’t have to fight over them. Personally, I think that the dumplings are the real stars of Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice. This is the must try dish at United Square.
We also had extra orders of char siew ($12 for medium portion, picture above) and fried kai lan ($8). The char siew was prepared with a glace that was sweeter than we would have liked. But it was still an enjoyable dish. The meat was nicely cooked and mostly moist and soft in the inside. The portion was probably more generous than what we sometimes get at a hawker centre for $12. The vegetable dish provided some balance to the otherwise meat intensive meal.
The chicken rice at Wee Nam Kee United Square continues to consistently good. The other dishes at the restaurant are just as interesting as the main attraction.
