Cheap and good food may be the new normal in times when there are worries about jobs and income. Fortunately, we have places like Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun @ Old Airport Road where we can get delectable food for only a few dollars.
The hawker stall run by 2 sisters in Old Airport Road Food Centre sells congee and the humble rice rolls with a wide variety of feelings starting from $2.50 per roll.
We are not sure if the stall actually has a name but it is known simply as “Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun”. It is not just that the rice roll or chee cheong fun is freshly prepared to order. The rice sheets for the chee cheong fun are made from scratch. The process involves putting rice flour over a square piece of cloth placed in a steamer and adding water. Cooking seems to take about a minute. The cooked rice sheet is separated from the cloth and is ready for ingredients to be added and rolled into chee cheong fun.
I ordered the BBQ Pork Chee Cheong Fun ($2.50 per roll) to eat at the food centre and the Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun ($2.50 per roll) to take away.
The rice sheets of Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun were really delicate, silky soft and smooth. There were not chewy but would glide down the throat easily. The chee cheong fun was generously drizzled with a dark sauce, and topped with fried onions. Sambal chilli was optional. The Hong Kong cheong fun style sauce was savoury with some sweetness. It added to the enjoyment of the humble rice rolls.
Both the classic fillings of char siew and mushrooms were fine. The next time we would give the slightly more exotic fillings a try – like otah.
Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun @ Old Airport Road also sells congee, prawn rolls and dumplings. It is a nice place for a light but delicious breakfast or a cheap and good meal any time of the day.

Not recommended. Just ordered two pack at $2.50.it far from the photo pictured. Very little portion per piece.
The photo was of the actual chee cheong fun served on a Styrofoam plate which we bought.
