Maison de PB by Paris Baguette was where we decided to have lunch at Jewel Changi after we browsed the many food places at the Singapore Changi Airport. The $29.90 set lunch looked attractive.
Paris Baguette is a popular chain of cafes with many outlets in Singapore. We have passed by them many times in different parts of Singapore. The beautiful cakes and tarts on display had turned our heads many a time, but we have so far not tried them. One reason being that we think that the prices of the pastries are quite high. For example these tarts cost $13.40 each.
At Maison de PB Jewel Changi by Paris Baguette, the display was not as full or elaborate as those we have seen in other Paris Baguette cafes. But that did not deter us as we have not tried any of them.
Maison de PB has these descriptions on its Facebook page : “European Artisan Inspired Food Collection …. Diverse food collection prepared with the passion for artisan food and true craftmanship”. We think that it is a more upmarket brand of PB and serves a wider variety of cooked food than the usual cafes.
Maison de PB Jewel Menu
Here are pictures of the Maison de PB Jewel set lunch menu. There is a choice of two or three courses priced at $29.90++ and $29.90++. We tried one of each. It is necessary to order the three course option to get the dessert
First Course
The first course was mushroom soup with a slice of baguette. The soup was good with enough bits of mushroom to provide texture to the soup.
Main Course
Our choice of main courses were Seafood Signature Pasta and the Beef on the Stone (which costs an extra $10). We liked the pasta. The seafood were nicely cooked and the seafood flavour infused well into the pasta. We would be happy to have this again.
The $10 supplement made the Beef on the Stone set lunch cost a total of $49.90++. Quite pricey but it was an interesting choice. It was served in two instalments. First a plate of grilled vegetables arrived. The assorted vegetables had been well grilled till they were soft and caramelised. We did not expect this and it was a pleasant surprise.
Next, a try holding a piece of tenderloin on a slab of hot stone was served. The steak arrived slightly cooked, in ‘rare’ state. The heat in the stone was enough for us to cook it to our desired level of ‘doneness’. Overall it was a good piece of steak and the concept is a good one. The only thing we did not like was the convex shape of the stone, which made balancing the meat a bit tricky.
Dessert and Coffee
After all that excitement with cooking our own meat on the table, coffee and dessert was served. We chose the hazelnut chocolate cake. The cappuccino tasted fine but the artwork (if you can call it that) was disappointing.
We liked the hazelnut chocolate cake better for its looks than its taste. There was too much cream in it for our liking. We thought that the dessert was the weakest part of the set lunch at Maison de PB Jewel. The smart strategy for our future visit would be to stick to the basic two course lunch – the nice soup, main course and coffee is a good value combination for $29.90++ at a nice cafe.
