The famous Ah Seng Durian at Ghim Moh Market has a second outlet in Bukit Merah. Next to the new outlet is Durian Lab Cafe by Ah Seng Durian, which serves durian-centric desserts and ice cream.
Ah Seng Durian
We were impressed by the factory production line like process when we bought durians at Ah Seng Durian Ghim Moh Market, one of the most well known durian sellers in Singapore.
We were rather excited to learn that Ah Seng Durian had opened a new outlet in Bukit Merah. Located in the row of HDB shophouses just next to the popular Alexandra Village Food Centre, it sells durians and other related products; and you can eat durians there.
Durian Lab Cafe
Located next to Ah Seng Durian is their Durian Lab Cafe. It looks like the regular contemporary cafe where you can go for cakes and waffles with coffee.
The air-conditioned indoor space is not big and can accommodate about 20. There are a few tables out in the corridors for those who prefer natural ventilation.
Menu of Durian Lab by Ah Seng Durian
Durian Lab by Ah Seng Durian offers durian ice cream, desserts, espresso coffee and other beverages.
No menu is really necessary as almost everything available is on display in the cafe.
Durian Lab Cafe does have a drinks menu and a simple food menu for cakes and waffle. Below are pictures of the menus.
Coffee & Ice Cream at Durian Lab Cafe
We visited Duran Lab Cafe recently after having had dinner. The ice cream of Durian Lab beckoned and we could not resist the temptation; but we restricted ourselves to a single scoop of Mao Shan Wang ice cream ($6.90) and coffee – $4.50 for Americano and $5 for Flat White.
The coffee, with beans from Common Man Coffee Roasters, was rather good. However, the Mao Shan Wang (MSW) ice cream was the star of the night. It was unlike the usual durian ice cream in the market. The MSW ice cream was rich and full of the intense bittersweet taste of Mao Shan Wang durian. It was like eating cold durian puree.
Takeaway Cake & Ice Cream
We could not eat more that night even though we enjoyed the MSW ice cream and cakes there were so tempting. So we did the next best thing – we bought cakes and ice cream to eat at home. We got a pint of MSW ice cream ($29.90) to takeaway. We also purchased 2 pieces of MSW Roll ($8 per piece).
The MSW Roll was nice. The sponge cake was soft and moist. The durian cream had sufficient flavour of the fruit without being overpowering.
We found out later that the delicious cakes and pastries at Durian Lab are supplied by Flor Patisserie and Keong Saik Bakery – made using Ah Seng Durian puree of course.
Durian lovers’ dream cafe
For durian lovers, Durian Lab Cafe is like the best of all possible worlds. We can get good coffee of Common Man Coffee Roasters, delectable cakes and pastries of Flor Patisserie and Keong Saik Bakery, made using Ah Seng Durian puree, and great MSW ice cream in a comfortable space.
We would certainly be visiting Durian Lab Cafe again – for their MSW ice cream and also to try other tempting items like MSW Sago dessert, durian burnt cheesecake, MSW Mille-Feuille and MSW Kueh Salat.
