Tampopo Grand Takashimaya – Casual Japanese Restaurant

Tampopo Grand Takashimaya is located on the 4th floor where there is a cluster of restaurants. We had a simple tempura lunch there recently.

Tampopo Grand is described as the premium brand of TAMPOPO Group which has a few branches in Singapore. Don’t confuse the Grand outlet with Tampopo @ Takashimaya which is a “regular” Tampopo Japanese restaurant in basement 2 of the same Ngee Ann City building. They are all family restaurants that offer a wide range of popular Japanese cuisine such as sushi, tempura, ramen, sukiyaki and set meals, although the menu might be different. Tampopo Grand has different seating options – counter, booth, regular tables and a couple of private rooms.

The menu at the Grand outlet is rather extensive. Here are some sample pages to give you an idea of the type of food and prices to expect. As you can see from the menu, it is well worn at the edges. This must be quite a popular Japanese restaurant at Takashimaya. We decided to have the ebi tempura udon ($23++) and the tempura don set ($26++). Green tea costs $3 per person. After adding service charge and the new 8% GST, our total lunch cost was $65.35.

Tempura Udon

Our tempura udon set was one of the simplest set menus available on the menu. It was quite a standard tempura udon. A nice choice for a quick Japanese meal. Better still if very hungry as the udon portion was substantial.

The tempura rice bowl was a more interesting choice. Other than the replacement of the udon with rice, we thought that the prawns used for this dish were better than the former. They looked larger and had better texture. Perhaps the additional sauce also enhanced the taste. Being a set meal, it also came with miso soup and slices of watermelon as dessert. This would be our preferred choice for a simple tempura meal when shopping at Takashimaya in the future.

We did not drink that day but Grand Tampopo has a Japanese beer promotion that seems interesting – 5 cans for $48.
