Fong Sheng Hao Westgate : Top 10 “must eat” Taipei Breakfast

Fong Sheng Hao Westgate is the Jurong East outlet of the famous Taiwanese eatery 豐盛號 from Taipei’s Shilin Market. It is famous for its charcoal-grilled sandwiches.

Top 10 Tape Breakfast at Westgate

Described as one of Taipei’s “top 10 must eat breakfast”, the Fong Sheng Hao breakfast of grilled toast with milk tea is certainly the kind of food that resonates with Singaporeans. Perhaps it is the equivalent of our kaya toast, half-boiled eggs and kopi. Fong Sheng Hao Singapore set up their first Lion City outlet in 2019 at Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ). You can read about our FSH breakfast experience here.

The Fong Sheng Hao Westgate outlet enjoys a prime ground floor location at the Westgate mall. It is not a big outlet and has a simple decor with mild industrial vibes. It is quite different from the PLQ outlet which has a warmer atmosphere. Ordering and payment is done at the counter. It is a self-service cafe where a buzzer signals that your food is ready for collection.

Fong Sheng Hao Westgate Menu

Here are pictures of some sections from the menu. Most of the food available would be suitable for breakfast or brunch. Many types of sandwich and snacks are available. Various rice bowl alternatives provide the more substantial meal options.

We decided to order the handmade pork patty ($6.90), pork floss egg pancake ($6.90), Taiwanese braised pork rice with kopi set ($10.50) and TW popcorn chicken with rice milk tea set ($14.50).

FSH Westgate Rice Bowls

In a previous visit to the Paya Lebar outlet, we preferred the Lu Rou Fan, or Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice, to the Popcorn Chicken Rice Bowl. However, on this visit to the newer Fong Sheng Hao Westgate, we had second thoughts. The braised pork rice bowl was basically the same – braised pork plus egg, pork floss and cucumber. But on this occasion, we thought that the pork pieces had a high fats to lean meat ratio. Eating this rice bowl was quite an oily experience. The crunchy cucumber slices helped to reduce that somewhat.

“Popcorn chicken” is basically deep-fried pieces of chicken that had been marinated with soy sauce and various other ingredients. The Popcorn Chicken Rice is a bowl of steamed rice topped with pieces of the crispy fried chicken, plus a sunny-side up egg , cucumber slices and a small piece of pork patty. You can’t really go wrong with dee- fried chicken. We liked this dish better than the lu rou fan on this visit to Fong Sheng Hao.

The Sandwiches

The non-rice dishes were the winners on that day. The Taiwan handmade pork patty sandwich had a simple Singapore coffeeshop or HK char chaan tang character. A no-frills toasted sandwich with egg and pork as fillings. This would make a suitable breakfast with the kopi provided as a set.

We also tried the pork floss egg pancake. With pork floss rolled up like a skinny popiah, this turned out to be be our favourite item of the day. With tasty contents in a slightly chewy and crisp skin, this reminded us of our simple shao bing 燒餅 breakfast during a pre-COVID visit to Yong He Dou Jiang Taipei (永和豆漿) store.

Final Thoughts on Fong Sheng Hao Westgate

As an alternative to our local kopi and kaya toast breakfast, the sandwich and drink sets at Fong Sheng Hao Westgate provide an interesting and affordable alternative. It is however a small outlet and it is best to avoid peak hours when visiting.
