SYIP Luzerne is a stylish new cafe that opened at Bendemeer several months ago. It is located on the ground floor of a commercial building The Luzerne building which also houses ceramics tableware company Hiap Huat Holdings. Their lovely ceramics showroom on level 5 provides another reason to visit this location.
SYIP Cafe
Pronounced as “sip”, SYIP opened its first cafe at Owen Road in the Farrer Park area around 2 years ago. SYIP Farrer Park is a very popular cafe. It gets crowded at peak hours and enjoys a steady flow of customers at off peak hours. The only problem with that place is that it is rather small. Not long after, they opened the second SYIP cafe along Bendemeer. Referred to as SYIP Luzerne, the difference in decor is like day and night.

SYIP Luzerne has lots of space and a minimalist decor. Put a few tables in there with computers and it could look like an Apple Store.
Food and Menu
The usual cafe food items are on the menu, such as big breakfast, burgers, avocado toast and various types of cakes and pastries. Here are pictures of some items on display as well as sample pages from the menu.
Kaya Butter French Toast
As we already had lunch, we were there only for coffee (and to check out the ceramics showroom after that). But this item – Kaya Butter French Toast ($17) in the menu caught our eye. Modelled after the kopitiam half-boiled egg and kaya toast combination, this also arrived as a piece of toast and two eggs.
But there is a difference. This is the prettiest piece of kaya toast I have seen – and also the most expensive.
Making toast more beautiful certainly enhanced the eating experience. But what was surprising was how good the “furikake egg” tasted. A quick internet search revealed that furikake is a dry Japanese condiment made with items like sesame seeds and seaweed flakes. The common half boiled tasted very different simply by the addition of this. No need for soy sauce or pepper on this ‘atas” egg.
SYIP Luzerne Coffee
Coffee was good at the cafe, but not much different from those at other good cafes. The standard of coffee in Singapore hip cafes is rather high these days. What is memorable about SYIP Luzerne was its impressive decor and good food.
