The charming Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie, known for its delectable viennoiserie and cozy ambience, has been delighting patrons in Hamilton Road as a bakery and a petite cafe. It has opened a new outlet in Tanjong Katong Road boasting a spacious dining area that leans towards a full-fledged cafe experience.
New Bakery Cafe in Tanjong Katong
Do we really need yet another cafe in Tanjong Katong? The answer might be “probably not”, but then variety is the spice of life and Tanjong Katong residents would welcome more options to cater to diverse tastes and preferences. The good thing is that Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie is not just another cafe. It is first of all an artisanal bakery. Its passionate baker & owner, Elaine Seah, is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Tokyo who takes pride in bringing together the freshest and most authentic ingredients to her bakes. She has gained a loyal following for freshly made quality traditional French bakes and innovative creations.
The new Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie is nestled among a row of shophouses, just across from the Canadian International School, and is just a few doors away from the popular Little Rogue Coffee.
The interior design of the new bakery cafe in Tanjong Katong Road is simple yet pleasing to the eye. The dining space is bright and airy. The off-white and earth tones colour scheme exudes a soothing and warm ambiance.
Some have speculated that the furniture might have been acquired from a warehouse that bought over items from closed-down cafes. There are furniture of diverse styles in different sections of the cafe. While the various series of furniture in Lunar Rabbit Tanjong Katong don’t necessarily match, it adds a certain charm to the bakery cafe.
Menu of Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie
Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie does not really need a menu. Almost everything they offer are on display in the glass shelves.
However, they have recently launched a breakfast menu offering stuffed croissants as well as Croque Madame and Croque Monsieur.
The launch deal is really attractive. You order a reasonably priced breakfast item and you get a beverage of your choice free.
Brunch at Lunar Rabbit Tanjong Katong
We visited Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie in Tanjong Katong for brunch recently. The staff were friendly and welcoming.
We ordered a Stuffed Croissant with Turkey Ham ($16.80) and a Croque Madame ($13.80). Cafe Latte and Cappuccino were our beverage selections. We also ordered the fancifully named Le Mango Passion Fruit Cube ($6.50).
Coffee at Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie
We were happy with Lunar Rabbit’s well-brewed cups of coffee. The barista’s attempt at latte art with a rabbit motif was endearing, but we might not have made out the rabbit if we were not in a cafe called Lunar Rabbit. The standard heart-shaped latte art was more successful.
Stuffed Croissants & Croque Madame
The Stuffed Croissant was nicely plated. A standard croissant was stuffed with scambled eggs and turkey ham, with a small serving of salad on the side. There were also 3 pieces of cookies to make the meal more complete. The best part of the dish was the croissant made with French AOP butter. It was light and airy with crispy layers on the outside.
The Croque Madame of Lunar Rabbit was a warm flaky croissant sandwich topped with a sunny side up. It looked great. Taste-wise, it was average.
Fancy Pastry
Le Mango Passion Fruit Cube looked gorgeous. It was a cube croissant filled with a sweet, tangy mango and passion fruit cream and topped with vanilla frosting and small pieces of mango. It was nice, but it fell a little bit short of the expectations prompted by the excellent Almond Croissant and Kouign-amann that we had tried at their Hamilton Road outlet.
New Bakery Cafe with Potential
The Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie breakfast set was a value for money deal. We thought the breakfast items we tried were average measured against the high standards of its viennoiserie, but the coffee was good. The new bakery cafe has room for improvements. It is a great bakery with every potential to become a great cafe too. Give it a bit of time. We believe that with some tweaks, Lunar Rabbit Boulangerie in Tanjong Katong will become a popular cafe in the East, and the barista will get the latte art with a rabbit motif right soon.
