The popular nasi lemak store run by a couple who left corporate jobs to become hawkers, Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak, finds a new home in Cantonment Road.
French Road to Cantonment Road
Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak started business in a kopitiam along French Road during the pandemic. When the kopitiam suddenly closed down, they had to look for new premises. They restarted their business in April 2022 in Tiong Bahru, taking a space in a cofffeeshop along Seng Poh Road which was famous for its green metal doors.
The space at Seng Poh Road was vacated by the very popular Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice. That spot must have some magic dust as 8days reported that “Nasi Lemak Hawkers See Long Queues After Taking Over Famed Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice Stall“.
In June 2023, Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak announced that they had to close again. The Seng Poh Road coffeeshop they were in had decided to cease operation. Again!
The good news is that they found a new location. This time not in another traditional coffeeshop. Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak had their grand opening on 5 September at their new location at 243 Cantonment Road.
New Location
Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak now operates a stall in a mini food centre of sort on the ground level of a quaint three storey building. Located near the junction of Cantonment Road and Yan Kit Road, The food centre houses 7 or 8 stalls and has limited seating. There are stalls selling roasted meats, fishball noodles, Korean food and Thai seafood. The famous Wano Niku stall (that sells Japanese Wagyu Yakiniku) is there.
There is a small carpark in front of the food stalls. The carpark is accessible only via Yan Kit Road, which is a one way street. For those walking from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station, there is a helpful video on the nasi lemak stall’s Facebook page showing the shortest route to get to the stall.
Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak
Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak sells nasi lemak in standard sets. Each set comes with a main item plus egg, achar and ikan bilis. Prices range from $5 to $6.80. There is a long list of add-ons so you can customise your sets. They also offer mee goreng, in case you want nasi lemak without nasi.
We tried their Chicken Drumstick Set (with otah add-on) and the Otah Set (with bergedil add-on).
They use basmati rice. The coconut rice had a nice texture and was aromatic. The sambal chili had a combination of sweetness and spiciness with a tinge of sourness. Their fried ikan bilis and peanuts were crispy. The achar provided a nice contrasting taste and texture.
The chicken drumstick was flavourful – with very crispy skin and succulent meat inside.
The otah was tasty. It was moist and soft and quite spicy. Their begedil, Malay style fried potato patty, was of the expected standard – with good texture and flavours.
Overall, we would count Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak among the eateries in Singapore which would rank highly for cheap and good nasi lemak.
