Tucela Gelato is something of an ice cream and coffee oasis in the heartland estate of St George’s. The cafe at Block 3, St George’s Road serves gelato, with waffles, croffle and brownie, as well as artisanal coffee and tea.
St George’s Estate
St George’s Estate is a residential area in the Kallang-Whampoa area, close to the Whampoa River. The Boon Keng MRT Station is about a ten minute walk from the estate. There is an interesting My St. George’s blog by a group of primary six students that has snippets about the physical environment, people and amenities in the estate.
In an old HBD Estate like St George’s Estate, there is a lack of trendy cafes and dessert shops that are common in neighbourhoods like Lavender or Holland Village. If you are looking for a good cup of coffee or quality handcrafted ice cream in the the Kallang-Whampoa area, you will be glad to know that Tucela Gelato cafe at Block 3, St George’s Road offers what you can expect in stylish cafes in hip precincts.
Menu of Tucela Gelato
With a name like Tucela Gelato, you know that the main items on the cafe’s menu will be gelato (or Italian style ice cream that is typically denser and creamier than regular ice cream). There are classic flavours like chocolate and pistachios as well as more unusual flavours like blue pea vanilla and yuan yang.
You can have the gelato in a cup, with a waffle cone, or as a topping on one of these baked treats: a Belgian waffle, a croffle, a brownie, or a praffle. The croffle is a hybrid of a croissant and waffle; and praffle is roti prata baked in a waffle maker.
Savoury snacks such as Egg Mayo Croffle and Ham & Cheese Praffle Roll are also on the menu.
Beverages on the menu include soda, tea, espresso coffee and cold brew coffee. If you want something more fancy, affogato is also available. You can also design your own gelato creations.
Pitstop at Tucela Gelato Cafe
Looking to duplicate a door access card, I ended up in St George’s Estate, a part of Singapore that I had not visited for quite a while. I spotted an ice cream shop nestled among the traditional HDB provision shops, medical clinics and local eateries. The pastel-colored interior was warm and inviting and had a cozy atmosphere. I decided to treat myself to a scoop of their ice cream. Once in there, I was tempted to try the waffle too.
I ordered the Single Scoop of Honey Lavender Ice Cream ($4) with Belgian Waffle ($5.50) and Hot Lychee Fiesta Tea ($3.50).
The rich and creamy ice cream, with its delicate floral lavender notes and sweet honey, created a nice contrast with the warm, slightly crispy waffle. There was a delightful combination of tastes and textures.
Sipping on a cup of refreshing Hot Lychee Fiesta Tea was a very pleasant experience. The aroma of lychee was both calming and enticing. The subtle yet distinctive fruity note of the tea made it a very soothing and delightful beverage.
Cozy Café at St. George’s Road
Tucela Gelato is an oasis for those seeking a nice comfortable cafe in the somewhat unglamorous heartland neighborhood of St Georges’ Estate. The prices are reasonable, and the service is friendly and attentive. Whether you are looking for a hot cappuccino, a nice cup of infused tea or delicious gelato with waffle, this cozy cafe at St. George’s Road is probably the best choice in the neighbourhood.
