Himawari Japanese Restaurant at Alexandra Road is a crowded place at lunchtime on weekdays. Office workers from the surrounding areas come for the affordable set lunch deals. They also have a la carte buffets at lunch and dinner, which are discounted by 20% for seniors 65 and above. This makes it a popular place for Japanese food in Singapore despite its relatively remote location.
Japanese Food at West Coast Singapore
Located near the junction of Keppel Road and Alexandra Road, Himawari Japanese Restaurant is a place on the radar of West Coast residents who have affordable Japanese food on their minds. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a cluster of low rise buildings which mainly house offices and commercial entities such as the LG service centre. The decor is dominated by wood panels and furniture – cosy and a bit dark.
Himawari Japanese Restaurant Menu
This restaurant reminds me of another Japanese restaurant in the west – Fish Mart Sakuraya in West Coast Plaza. Both are restaurants with a full range of Japanese cuisine on the menu. Sushi, tempura, unagi, cooked dishes of various types are available. Here are some sample screen shots of the Himawari online food menu, showing some of the seasonal items, set lunch and bento selections.
What We Ate at Himawari Japanese Restaurant Alexandra Road
Appetisers and Salad
We tried a couple of a la carte appetisers. The edamame beans were fat and juicy. They will be a good companion with sake and beer at this place. Chawanmushi was flavourful and was packed with ingredients.
The Sashimi Salad is a dish that is suitable for those on a diet. It contains a mix of small pieces of sashimi, crab meat, prawns, tomatoes, fish roe, cucumber with assorted greens. Our friend on a diet seemed content with her choice that day.
Himawari Daily Set Lunch
In additional to the bento sets, there is also a choice of set lunches which change on a daily basis. On the day of our visit, there were 3 Tuesday set lunches. This is one of them – the Tuesday set lunch (C), a combination of sushi, sashimi and soup that cost $25.80.
The best part of this dish was the sashimi. The thick slices of tuna and sashimi were juicy and fresh. We were not as impressed with the sushi. The unagi sushi had grilled eel that did not have much flavour. Its texture was also not as firm as we liked.
Bento Sets
We tried two of the many bento sets. Tempura is usually a safe bet at an unfamiliar Japanese restaurant and this was the case at Himawari restaurant. The tempura set ($24) had two prawns, a piece of fish and some vegetables. It was very good for the price.
Just as satisfying was the Saba Shioyaki Set ($20). The grilled mackerel fat, juicy and tasty. With its price of $20, its cost performance is high. We will be happy to order this again.
