Yamazato Okura Tokyo is described as a fine Japanese dining venue for kappo cuisine, sushi and tempura. Counter seating as well as private rooms and a dining hall provide options for a variety of occasions. Our sushi counter lunch at Okura Hotel Tokyo was our most expensive Japanese meal in Tokyo during this 2023 trip.
The Okura Tokyo is a huge hotel. It was a bit of an adventure finding the restaurant. We had to look out for various signs and follow them to get to it. The restaurant is tucked in a quiet corner where the entrance was concealed behind a large Japanese silk screen. Very subtle and elegant! Once you enter the restaurant, you feel you have stepped into an immediate oasis of calm. Everything was peaceful as kimono-clad staff whisk diners to their respective dining locations.

The seating at the counter was intimate which facilitated conversations with the sushi chef. Diners who were there to celebrate a special occasion (such as a birthday) had pretty ornamental ribbons attached to their chopsticks holders to mark the occasion for them.

There are various sushi courses available with different price tags. Since we had not been back in Tokyo for several years, we decided on a mid-range Kikyo set (Yen 16,500) which came with 15 pieces of nigiri-sushi. We think it was the right decision. Just look at some of the pictures we took further below.
The meal started with a refreshing bowl of salad. This was followed by generously-sized pieces of nigiri-sushi including red snapper, small snapper, arrow jack, maguro tuna, chutoro (fatty) tuna, otoro (most fatty) tuna, tiger prawn, squid, anchovy, horse mackerel, bonito tuna, sea clams, salmon roe, sea urchin from Hokkaido and seawater eel.
By the way, the pictures are not in the exact same order as the courses we had. The ingredients used were so fresh which made this meal a well-worth splurge. Our experience was also enhanced by the sushi chef serving us. He was friendly and explained each course to us.
The best items were the different types of tuna sushi, the best one being the otoro tuna. It was a sublime experience. The least favourite course was the seawater eel. We are simply not eel fans.
The meal ended without fanfare with a tuna roll, some tamago and a miso soup.
