知味面点 Flourful Delight in Golden Mile – restaurant quality Xiao Long Bao

Golden Mile Food Centre is a haven for locals in the know, with many drawn to the popular stalls for claypot rice, Hainanese beef noodles, Teochew lor mee and other hawker delights. 知味面点 Flourful Delight, a stall which specializes in dumplings and Chinese noodles, is still a bit under the radar, but it offers good restaurant quality Xiao Long Bao or Shanghainese soup dumplings.

Restaurant Quality Food of Flourful Delight

While most Singaporeans associate Xiao Long Bao (XLB) with restaurants like Din Tai Fung or Crystal Jade, Flourful Delight proves that very good XLB can be found in a hawker centre. Tucked away on the second floor of Golden Mile Food Centre, near the famous Yew Chuan Claypot Rice Stall, Flourful Delight offers a selection of steamed, boiled and pan-fried dumplings, alongside a small menu of noodles.

We opted for the Xiao Long Bao ($5 for 6) and the Braised Pork Ribs Noodles ($5).

Be prepared to wait 5 to 10 minutes, for the XLB to be steamed. The wait would be well worth it. The dumplings had thin skins that hold a generous amount of flavourful soup and well-seasoned pork filling. The very tip of the dumpling was just a bit chewy (maybe it might benefit from slightly longer steaming), but that did not detract from the overall enjoyment. It was XLB on par with those served in some of Singapore’s better XLB restaurants.

Braised Pork Ribs Noodles

Flourful Delight at Golden Mile

The Braised Pork Ribs Noodles was a visual treat – neatly arranged and colourful, unlike what we might typically expect of hawker fare. The noodles were cooked perfectly, retaining a satisfying bite. The braised pork was tender and flavourful. The sauce had a delightful tangy and savoury profile with just a hint of spiciness. It was an enjoyable dish. The portion size was quite generous.

Cheap & Good Food

The entire meal, comprising Xiao Long Bao and braised pork noodles, came to a total of $10 – significantly lower than prices at even casual chain restaurants. Sure, we did not have air-conditioning or table service, but we could use our CDC vouchers. Our meal at Flourful Delight in Golden Mile Food Centre reminds us that in Singapore, reputed to be one of the most expensive cities in the world, ordinary folks can still find good restaurant quality food at very affordable prices.
