Hanoi 1988 Paris is a small Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of the capital city of France. This restaurant in the 1st arrondissement is a convenient place for homesick Asian tourists to have a bowl of Vietnamese phở in between their meals of French cuisine.
Vietnamese Restaurant Near Notre Dame
The restaurant is located at the western tip of Île de la Cité, the larger of the two islands in The Seine. It shares this island with the famous Notre Dame Cathedral, which at the time of our visit in April 2024 was still under reconstruction. But a large part of the building seems to have been restored and completion is not far away.
Hanoi 1988 has a sister restaurant, Ha Noi 1988 Sao Vang, on the neighbouring (and smaller) island, Île Saint-Louis. This locality is said to be one of the oldest areas in Paris. The restaurant dining areas are on the ground and first floors of this small building. We like the rustic and cosy feel of the place.
There is an enclosed private space outside, along the pavement. On days when the weather is good, we can imagine that the outdoor area will be a nice place to have some Vietnamese noodles and spring rolls with French wines. From here one gets a good view of the nice buildings on the other side (the Left Bank) of the Seine.
Hanoi 1988 Paris Menu
Here are pictures of the restaurant menu. Familiar dishes of casual Vietnamese cuisine are available. Prices of phở (flat rice noodles) start from around €15.
Vietnamese Phở in Paris
Being situated mid-way between the Left and Right Banks of Paris, Hanoi 1988 Paris was a convenient place for a quick stopover on the way from Saint-Germain-des-Prés to Le Marais. We tried two types of phở : Phở du Chef (beef noodle soup, €15.80) and Phở Gà (chicken noodle soup, €14.80).
Both bowls of noodles looked roughly the same. The beef noodle soup (picture above) had thin slices of beef while the chicken noodles (picture below) had chucks of chicken. The garnishes, broth and noodles seemed identical to us. We found the broth and noodles to be the best parts of the dishes. With the beef being sliced extremely thin, their presence was hardly felt. We thought that the chicken has more substantial meat content.
The broth was pleasant and lightly flavoured while the flat noodles were light. These were the highlights. We enjoyed both the same. Given than the chicken version costs slightly less, this is the one we would order on a future visit.
