A Break at Equate – a stylish cafe in Orchard Central

A trip to Orchard Road, Singapore’s shopper’s paradise, can quickly turn into a retail marathon. But even the most dedicated retail warriors may need a rejuvenating coffee break sometimes. Equate at Orchard Central, a stylish cafe offering weary feet and curious taste buds a welcome respite, can be a great a pit stop.

Equate Cafe

Equate is conveniently located on Level One of Orchard Central. The first thing that grabs your attention is the cafe’s avant-garde interior design. The centrepiece is two eye-catching trees rooted to the ceiling with their branches reaching down to the floor like a whimsical dreamscape. The juxtaposition of nature and modern design creates an inviting atmosphere.

Menu of Equate

Equate’s menu is not quite the typical “Orchard Road cafe menu”. They do serve up a selection of freshly brewed coffee, perfect for a pick-me-up during your shopping marathon. But they also have a delectable spread of handcrafted pastries and sandos. The menu also features interesting items such as fisherman curry with sourdough and burnt butter shokupan.

Ondeh Croissant Delight

I opted for the Ondeh Croissant Cube ($7.80). It was a creation which married the buttery flakiness of a French croissant with the local flavours ondeh-ondeh. The presentation was beautiful – a golden-brown croissant drizzled with gula melaka coconut cream and topped with toasted coconut flakes. The croissant was crispy but had a soft, moist interior with gula melaka filling. It was a delightful way to enjoy croissant.

Cold Brew

I had the Cold Brew White Coffee ($7) to go with the sweet Ondeh Croissant. The chilled coffee was smooth and creamy, offering a delightful subtle fruitiness. It was quality coffee, satisfying my caffeine craving while also being a refreshingly thirst-quenching beverage.

A Stylish Pit Stop

Overall, my coffee break at Equate was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The friendly staff, the interesting menu that caters to both sweet and savoury cravings, good coffee and the very pleasant atmosphere all come together to create a perfect pit stop in Orchard Road. If you drawing up a “Where to have a coffee break in Orchard Road list”, Equate Orchard Central should be put on that list.
