Common Man Coffee Alexandra Road – Quite new cafe in an old building.

Common Man Coffee Alexandra Road is possibly the most interesting of the CMCR outlets in Singapore. It is quite new (opened in 2023) and occupies a heritage building linked to the Anchorpoint shopping mall. The small conserved building facing the IKEA Alexandra store used to be part of the Anchor beer brewery.

Coffee Roaster and Cafe in former Brewery

The brew master’s office of the former Archipelago Brewery Company was what this building was used for when the property was operating as a brewery along Alexandra Road. According to the Frasers Property website, the brewery complex was built to produce the well-known light pilsner called Anchor Beer. Other than this quaint building, the other brewery buildings appears to have been redeveloped into what is now the Anchorpoint Mall and the condominium known as The Anchorage. Another part of the brewery that was on the other side of Alexandra Road has become the building where IKEA now stands. Common Man Coffee Alexandra Road is a relatively new tenant on these premises. Before them, the conserved building was successively occupied by other f & b businesses such as Bukang Korean BBQ & Seafood.

Common Man Coffee Roasters at Anchorage

We stopped by at this CMCR outlet after our lunch at Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice (Anchorpoint). The layout of the cafe reminded us of the Common Man Roasters Martin Road outlet. The double rows of counter seating seems like a good use of space to fit in seats in the long and narrow space.

Although the building looks small from the outside, the cafe is actually quite large. In addition to the considerable number of indoor seats seen in these pictures, there are also outdoor tables.

For this visit we only had coffee and a simple snack. Two cappuccinos and a slice of chocolate banana cake. The quality of the coffee and cakes at CMCR is consistently high and this was also the case on this visit. The coffee was priced at $6.50 each and the cake costing around $9. After the usual “++”, the total cost of our cake and coffee stopover was close to what we paid for our sumptuous lunch at Go-Ang Pratunam next door.
