Common Man Coffee Roasters Café  (CMCR Singapore)

Common Man Coffee Roasters Café at Martin Road is a destination cafe for coffee drinkers in the Mohamed Sultan / River Valley Road area. Crowded at peak hours but still humming in the afternoon, it is a comfortable place to catch up over a cup of well-brewed coffee.

According to their website, “Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR) is a café concept and coffee roaster established in Singapore back in 2013, with the aim of championing specialty coffee throughout the region. ” Its key partners are said to be Five Senses Coffee Australia, and the Singapore’s Spa Esprit Group.

There are a few Common Man cafes in Singapore including Common Man Coffee Roasters Joo Chiat and Common Man Stan at Stanley Street. They also have an outlet in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Their Martin Road outlet has a nice cafe vibe. There is a bit of gritty industrial design with exposed pipes and ac ducting. But this is balanced with the warm golden glow of lots of soft filament light bulbs.

Here are pictures of some parts of the coffee and drinks menu and the food menu. A full menu is available on line (link below). The food choices are typical cafe – breakfast and brunch food – pancakes, sandwiches etc. Which is the kind of food that goes well with their famous coffee.

What We Drank And Ate at CMCR Martin Road

We stopped by at CMCR for coffee after lunch at the nearby Bakalaki restaurant (we will write about that soon). The cafe was rather quite as we avoided the lunch crowd. We had a black and a white coffee (nowadays they don’t seem to make a distinction between latte and cappuccino). As you can expect the coffee was top notch – in both colours.

For a snack to go with the coffee, we shared a croissant. As you may expect, their croissants are from Tiong Bahru Bakery, a brand that is part of the Spa Esprit Group. Some say the Tiong Bahru croissants are the best in Singapore. We have not eaten enough to verify that but it was large and had the right texture – crusty outside and moist inside. Best eaten with butter provided.

Judging from the queuing instructions on the signs at the entrance, the cafe can get crowded at times. It was a nice comfortable place to have coffee on a quiet weekday afternoon. Service was friendly and helpful.
