Nikutosake – new Japanese casual diner in PLQ Mall

Nikutosake is a new, casual eatery by Aburi-En, which is a member of the En Group. It is located in the mall at Paya Lebar Quarter, and the main features of its menu are niku (meat dishes) and sake (Japanese rice wine).

The new Nikutosake restaurant is located on the ground level of PLQ Mall, facing the plaza. It sits between Wursthans and Chimichanga. The decor includes the traditional fabric dividers, or norens, and paper lanterns. It has the typical Japanese casual diner look and feel.

The main seating area is out in the sheltered naturally ventilated plaza. There are a few tables in the small air-conditioned dining space.

Menu of Nikutosake

The menu at Nikutosake highlights grilled meats, but it offers a wide variety. You will find rice bowls and ramen, along with sides like gyoza and grilled squid. There are also low-carb and plant-based options available. Below are random screenshots of the digital menu for lunch.

There is a separate menu for dinner. It offers teppan dishes (Japanese Hot Plate) and Izakaya-style dishes like grilled crab roe with miso, fried jumbo smelt fish and deep-fried chicken cartilage.

Ramen & Donburi @ Nikutosake

We ordered the Nikutosake Signature Dry Ramen ($10.90) and the Hokkaido Buta Yakinuku Don ($11.90). We paid a $3 top up for a side dish of gyoza and green tea. Service charge and GST would be added to the bill.

Both the ramen and donburi would be served with a small side dish and miso soup.

Nikutosake Signature Dry Ramen

The Nikutosake Signature Dry Ramen was a satisfying bowl of noodles with a nice, chewy texture, lightly coated in a savoury sauce. The grilled pork belly was glazed with yakiniku sauce, giving it a rich, smoky-sweet flavour. The meat was tender. The combination of textures and flavours made for a simple but enjoyable one dish meal.

Hokkaido Buta Yakinuku Don

The Hokkaido Buta Yakiniku Don was a rice bowl featuring succulent pork belly marinated in a sweet and savoury sauce. Garnishes added colours and contrasting textures. The meat was nicely grilled. The smoky flavour of the meat complemented the soft texture of the rice, creating a satisfying and comforting dish.

The two pieces of gyoza appeared rather unremarkable, lacking any distinctive qualities that would set them apart.
