Siong Tong Gai is a popular chain of restaurants in Malaysia that specialises in fresh steamed fish in a superior broth. To bring its signature dish beyond Malaysia, it has opened a restaurant in Singapore in 313@somerset earlier this year. The menu of the Singapore restaurant features more than just fish, and includes a wide variety of pork, chicken and vegetable dishes.

Lunch at Siong Tong Gai
We visited Siong Tong Gai in 313@somerset on a weekday when we wanted a quick, light lunch. We ordered three dishes to eat with steamed rice: Steamed Egg ($10.80), Three Treasure with Tofu ($12.80), and Lemon Fried Chicken ($16.80).
Both the Steamed Egg and the Three Treasures with Tofu were excellent. The “three treasures” referred to dou miao (sweet pea sprouts) and both white and brown shimeji mushrooms. The tofu, served with vegetables and mushrooms, offered a great variety of textures and was packed with flavour.
The Steamed Egg, garnished with spring onions and soy sauce, was a simple yet elegant dish. It could easily be enjoyed on its own, but also paired well with plain steamed rice.
The Lemon Fried Chicken was essentially battered fried chicken with lemon sauce served in a saucer, for dipping or drizzling. The chicken meat underneath the crust was tender. The sweet and tangy lemon sauce was as expected. The chicken dish was quite average compared to the delicious steamed egg and tofu.
Good Homely Chinese Food
We must visit Siong Tong Gai in 313@somerset again to try its signature steamed seafood dishes. The steamed egg and beancurd dishes we tried were flavourful and enjoyable. The restaurant was spacious and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and efficient. The prices are reasonable, and there are periodic promotions. Overall, Siong Tong Gai is a great option for homely Chinese food in the heart of Orchard Road, suitable for families, couples, or even solo diners.
