So Good Bakery and So Good So Good Char Chan Tang have become increasingly popular. However, many people may not yet be familiar with So Good Dining. While So Good So Good Char Chan Tang offers a self-service, casual dining experience, So Good Dining is a full-service restaurant offering dim sum and Hong Kong cuisine.
So Good Dining
So Good Dining Restaurant is located on the fourth floor of i12 Katong Mall. So Good So Good Char Chan Tang and So Good Dining are co-located, although they have separate entrances. The entrance to So Good Dining Restaurant is a nondescript door next to its understated signboard. It is easy to walk past the place without realising that there is a full-service Chinese restaurant there.
The restaurant occupies an L-shaped space. The decor is typical of a modern Chinese restaurant, with mainly large round tables that can seat about eight people. However, they also welcome smaller dining parties.
So Good Dining Menu
The Menu of So Good Dining is comprehensive. It has all the usual sections typically found in the menus of Chinese restaurants. There are Soups, Poultry, Meat, Seafood, Vegetables, Noodles and Desserts. There is also a dim sum list. Below are pictures of the a la carte menu.
There are also set menus for 4 pax, 6 pax and 8-10 pax.
Dim Sum at So Good Dining
We ordered 3 dim sum items – Pork Dumpling with Mushrooms, or Siew Mais ($6.40 for 4 pieces), Mini Glutinous Rice Dumplings ($6 for 2) and Pan Fried Carrot Cake ($4 for 2 pieces).
All the dim sum items were of the expected standard and were tasty. The glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in lotus leaf had a rich, earthy aroma. The sticky, slightly chewy glutinous rice had a satisfying, tender texture, and the filling was very palatable. The siew mais had tender, slightly chewy dumpling skins with a savoury filling of finely minced pork and mushroom.
The Pan-Fried Carrot Cake looked ordinary, but we were pleasantly surprised by the discreet pieces of soft radish inside. It seemed that the flour content was lower than usual, giving the cake a fresher, less doughy texture. It was more like biting into small pieces of steamed radish than a floury cake.
Claypot
We also had the Claypot Stewed Eggplant ($16). It was an aromatic and comforting dish. The eggplant was soft and smooth. The sauce was a delicious blend of a variety of sauces and pastes as well as minced pork and other ingredients. We would happily order this dish again to go with plain steamed rice.
Good, Unpretentious Chinese Restaurant
So Good Dining Restaurant offers good dim sum and Hong Kong dishes in a comfortable and inviting space. The service is good, and the prices are reasonable (do note that there are the usual “overheads” when dining here: towels are $0.30 each, and Chinese tea is $2.00 per person). Overall, we think So Good Dining is a good, unpretentious Chinese restaurant that should appeal to a wide clientele.
