Ma Maison Anchorpoint brought back memories of a visit to the first Ma Maison restaurant in Singapore at Bugis Junction. Remarkably, in a time when f & b restaurants come and go, Ma Maison Bugis has remained in the same place and with the same decor. A recent visit to another outlet at Anchorpoint gave us similar vibes.

Ma Maison Western Cafe
The first Ma Maison store in Singapore opened in 1995 at Bugis Junction. It is still in business today and has the same retro Western restaurant decor. The interior of Ma Maison Anchorpoint (picture below) has the same concept – dark wood furniture, dimly lit atmosphere and numerous kitchenware and household knick-knacks scattered about to create a homely mood. Both these outlets are in the “Western” category of Ma Maison restaurants in Singapore. Their other outlet categories are “Tonkatsu” and “Cafe”.

The cozy and inviting atmosphere strategy seems to be working. On a weekday lunch, the restaurant opposite Ikea Alexandra was a full house. I assume, people (like us) are drawn to the soft lighting and old world charm. The friendly service, which was a notch or two above the norm was an added bonus on our visit.

Ma Maison Anchorpoint Menu
Here are pictures of some parts of the restaurant menu. It contains a variety of dishes such as classic French dishes, some Japanese classics and some hybrid interpretations.

Our Ma Maison Tonkatsu Lunch
For our lunch we tried two tonkatsu dishes from the a la carte menu. The deep-fried pork loin tonkatsu ($19.30++) and tonkatsu curry ($20.80++).

Both dishes were consistent with what we remembered Ma Maison tonkatsu to be – nice soft pork with a crisp surface. No frills or decoration, just good comfort food. The tonkatsu curry was served on a traditional plating that gave out nostalgic vibes. The ala carte pork loin tonkatsu (picture below) does not come with rice or cabbage re-fills (which are available with the “meal” version), but was adequate for a low carb lunch.

The Room Key
Of course we cannot not mention the Room Key. Just as our first experience with Ma Maison at Bugis Junction, we were also handed a room key at Ma Maison Anchorpoint. That was presented to the cashier at the end of our visit to facilitate our “checking out”. A nice and nostalgic touch to end our lunch.
