Campur Nasi Padang at Wisma Geylang Serai

Nasi Padang, a gift from the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, is a staple in Singapore’s diverse food scene. It is like the Malay equivalent of the economic rice, a comforting and customisable meal. Hjh Maimunah Restaurant in Joo Chiat and Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang in Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre are popular places for Nasi Padang. The new Campur Nasi Padang in Wisma Geylang Serai (WGS) offers another welcome option.

Campur Nasi Padang

The new Campur Nasi Padang is situated on the ground level of Wisma Geylang Serai, a hub that celebrates Malay culture and heritage. The restaurant’s outdoor dining area, with its inviting setup, is perfect for those who enjoy al fresco dining. Step inside, and you’ll find a bright, cafeteria-style space that’s simple yet thoughtfully designed. The decor is functional but not without charm, with subtle decorative touches that add a homely feel.

The centrepiece of the restaurant is undoubtedly the long counter, where an array of dishes is displayed. The setup encourages diners to take their time, pointing and choosing from the tempting selection of dishes.

Menu of Campur Nasi Padang

Campur’s menu is a fusion of Malay, Indonesian, and Eurasian influences. Diners can choose from box sets, combo meals, or à la carte options. One of their signature dishes is the opulent Nasi Ambeng Platter.

For a la carte dishes, the drill is familiar: simply point and choose. From Kalio Ayam, Green Chilli Prawn to Beef Rendang, Campur prides itself on using time-honoured family recipes, perfected over generations. The owner also prepares the spices used in the dishes.

Beyond Nasi Padang, Campur also offers single-dish meals like lontong (rice cakes in coconut gravy) and roti kirai (netted pancake). A selection of traditional cakes, kuehs, and desserts such as Pulut Hitam (black glutinous rice dessert) and Bubur Cha Cha (sweet potato dessert in coconut milk) are also available.

Campur also has a programme to support home-based businesses. The WSG outlet provides a platform for home bakers to sell their cakes and pastries, giving them exposure and offering customers a wider variety.

During a recent visit, we ordered the lontong ($6) and the Nasi Padang with fish, sayur lodeh, and an egg omelette (totalling $11). We also ordered the Lopes ($2.50) for dessert and an Ice Kopi ($1.80).

The lontong was comforting, with its rich flavourful coconut milk curry and tender vegetables, while the Nasi Padang dishes were hearty and satisfying.

A good sign is a restaurant filled with happy diners. At Campur, we saw quite a few Makciks with satisfied faces. The food was indeed flavourful, showcasing a well-balanced blend of spices. The dishes weren’t overly spicy, allowing the subtle nuances of the flavours to shine through. We enjoyed our meal.
