Old Chang Kee is a familiar name in Singapore, often associated with its signature curry puffs and a range of readily available snacks like Sotong Balls and Cheezy Chicken Balls. These items are easily found at numerous outlets across the island. However, a lesser-known facet of this local F&B chain is its operation of Old Chang Kee Coffee House, a franchise dedicated to serving traditional Singaporean breakfast and local dishes.

Old Chang Kee Coffee House in Tanjong Pagar

Old Chang Kee Coffee House in Tanjong Pagar has been carefully designed to evoke the atmosphere of a traditional kopitiam in Malaya from the 1970s and 1980s.

The space is furnished with classic round marble-topped tables paired with traditional wooden stools. The layout incorporates traditional kopitiam features, including the distinctive arch-shaped serving counter with wire mesh and shelving displaying various beverages and snacks. Retro accessories enhance the nostalgic vibe. A vintage gramophone, old-style decorative items, and period-appropriate wall art are strategically placed.

Menu of Old Chang Kee
Old Chang Kee Coffee House focuses on traditional comfort food that can be found in Singapore in its early years as a nation. The menu includes the well-known Old Chang Kee curry puffs and baos. Other offerings range from nasi lemak with various protein options to Western pasta dishes and Indian prata bread. Rice and noodle combinations such as laksa and mee dishes are also available. For beverages, they provide options like kopi, teh, bandung and lime juice. Happy hour combo sets and kids’ meals are also part of their offerings.

Nasi Lemak & Macaroni Soup

During our visit, we sampled several dishes and the toasts set.
The Chicken Soup with Macaroni ($8.90) had clear tasty broth with tender pieces of chicken, sliced carrots and boiled potatoes. It was a simple bowl of comfort food. A balanced meal that was satisfying.

We also tried the Blue Pea Nasi Lemak with Dry Curry Chicken ($8.90). The coconut rice, distinctly coloured blue from butterfly pea flowers, created a visually appealing presentation. The dish included dry curry chicken pieces, crispy fried anchovies (ikan bilis), roasted peanuts, archar and a fried egg with a runny yolk at the centre. The sambal chilli paste was of course a must have ingredient. The combination of flavours and textures from the fragrant coconut rice, tender chicken, crunchy nuts and anchovies and egg contributed to a very good version of nasi lemak.

Kaya Toast & Eggs
Soft-boiled eggs with kaya toast is a classic Singaporean breakfast item that can be enjoyed any time of the day. Old Chang Kee Coffee House Kaya & Butter Toast Set ($4.50) includes toasts, 2 soft-boiled eggs and a cup of kopi or teh.

Old kopitiam cups and saucers were used to served the food and beverages. The soft-boiled eggs were cooked just right and had the texture and consistency we liked. The toast had the usual crispy exterior and the kaya had a nice rich flavour.

The traditional kopi was strong and aromatic. A good cup of traditional kopi tiam coffee.
