The Pantry Dempsey Hill – Quiet Place For a Simple Lunch

We decided to go to The Pantry cafe at Dempsey Hill for a quick lunch. This is a small restaurant in a quiet and scenic corner of the Dempsey dining enclave. It is next to Kids21 Dempsey, a set of retail outlets specialising in clothes and lifestyle things for children.

At Feast or The Pantry

At first it was a bit confusing for us. The big signboard at the entrance is The Pantry. An internet search on the restaurant landed us on a cafe known as At Feast, but it looked like the same place with the same address and similar looks. Once inside, we started to admire the place and concluded that it did not matter.

The Pantry is located in Block 16A Dempsey Road. Kids21 is in Block 16, an adjoining building. Together with nearby restaurants, Culina Bistro and Dempsey Cookhouse, we believe they are part of the COMO Dempsey cluster of food and lifestyle establishments in this part of Singapore.

The cafe is located in a small house surrounded by spacious outdoor area. There are indoor and outdoor dining areas. Unless the weather is very wet, we would prefer the outdoor area anytime. Dining there was like dining in a holiday resort. Simple tables in a basic structure, facing a wild forest with matching insect sounds.

They seem to have tried to bring the outdoors indoor by affixing lots of plastic plants on the ceiling of the indoor (air-conditioned) dining. Interesting, but not enough to pull from the appeal of the outdoor area.

Do not expect fancy dishes at this quaint little cafe at Dempsey. Here is a picture of the all day dining menu which has a simple menu with many items being suitable for the young ones. Which is quite appropriate being situated next to a kids store and playground.

A Simple Lunch at Dempsey

With quite a few fancy restaurants in the vicinity, it is not easy to think of a simple place for lunch in Dempsey. We think that we have found such a place. We tried two items – The Pantry fish and chips ($28++) and miso salmon grain bowl.

Snapper was the type of fish used in the fish and chips. We thought they did a good job in cooking the fish just right without any dryness. However we felt that the portion of fish was rather small. Our other dish of salmon bowl was more adult sized. A decent sized piece of salmon topped the bowl of rice. The presentation of both were quite simple.

Overall a different type of place to have a quick lunch at Dempsey.
