Two Chefs Eating Place at Commonwealth Crescent

Some weeks ago, we noticed the Two Chefs Eating Place restaurant on the way to Foong Kee Traditional Charcoal Roaster. We made a mental note to visit them very soon. Today, we finally ate at this highly-rated zi char restaurant in Commonwealth Crescent.

Zi Char Restaurant at Commonwealth Crescent

There are two Two Chefs Eating Place outlets in Singapore. The other one is in Sin Ming. The Commonwealth Crescent one is in the last unit of Block 116, a row of two-storied shophouses. This building is next to the Commonwealth Crescent Market where Foong Kee is located. From the outside, it looks slightly untidy with tables and chairs that seem to be randomly placed.

Fortunately it looks much better once we went inside. The interior was neatly organised and it felt cleaner than the average coffee shop. In particular, we noticed that the table we were seated at was sparkling clean. It has a respectable 4.1 Google review rating (1,491 reviews).

We thought that the zi char operations were also well-run. We were attended to soon after we were seated and orders were taken promptly. The large rack of clothes pegs (kiaps) suggest how busy this restaurant can be at peak hours. On a weekday lunch, it was peaceful and calm.

Two Chefs Eating Place Menu

Here are pictures of some pages from the restaurant menu. It contains the usual zi char restaurant items including the more premium seafood dishes for which prices are marked as “seasonal price”.

For our humble weekday lunch we only ordered three dishes (all small portions): vegetables with three types of egg ($10), coffee pork ribs ($12) and dry fried mee hoon ($5).

Pork Ribs, Vegetables and Bee Hoon

Our general impression was that all the dishes were well prepared and were enjoyable. Taking into account the rather reasonable pricing, it was even more enjoyable. The coffee pork ribs were meaty and nicely seasoned. We probably met our daily protein requirements with this dish alone. Comparing this with the famous coffee pork ribs of Keng Eng Kee. we thought that the KEK version seemed to be pricier but had a richer coffee flavour.

We were very satisfied with the vegetables cooked with three types of eggs – regular, salted and century. Seasoning and the blend of the different flavours of egg were nicely balanced. This was comparable to those in some good Chinese restaurants.

The fried mee hoon was well executed in a very dry style. The crisp bean sprouts and a mild wok hei were the accents to make this a very memorable dish. A soup version of this can be quickly done by mixing some of the fried mee hoon with broth from the egg dish. The portion was enough to be shared by two.

An affordable zi char lunch at Two Chefs Eating Place

In today’s high cost of dining out, we were glad to see an affordable restaurant with good tasting food. Being able to use CDC vouchers made it even better.
