The tiny Mui Kee Orchard Hong Kong congee restaurant which used to be on the ground floor of Shaw Centre has relocated to bigger premises on level 3 of the same building. It has been many years since we last visited the original Mui Kee outlet in Singapore and so we decided to check out their new home.

New Mui Kee Orchard Restaurant at Shaw Centre

The new Mui Kee congee restaurant (picture above) is much larger than the original. It is decidedly more spacious and comfortable. In a typical case, we would prefer such a newer and better upgrade. However, in this case, we think we prefer the original space (picture below) which was cramped and had a more authentic HK congee restaurant vibes.

There are a few familiar motifs carried over such as the mahjong tiles and fish sculptures on the wall. But these seem to be lost in the large canteen-like space.

Mui Kee Orchard Menu
Here are pictures of the Mui Kee set meal that is available on weekdays. All priced at $13.90++, noodle sets are available for lunch only (Monday to Friday) while congee set meals are available for lunch and dinner (Monday to Thursday).

There are also “special dishes” that are not listed in the physical food menu. They appear on the online menu used for ordering. Here is a screenshot of some of them.

For our quick lunch we ordered a few dishes from the a la carte lunch menu – signature wok hei congee with garoupa belly ($16.50++), beef brisket noodles ($14.50++) and poached Hong Kong kai lan ($10.50++).

Hong Kong Congee and Noodles Lunch
The beef brisket noodles tasted like how we expected Hong Kong beef noodles to be. But it would have been better if the beef was softer and not so dry.

The kai lan looked delicious and full of nutrients with its rich dark green colour. But we thought that the leaves were rather thick and leathery. As the congee was served super hot, we immersed most of the vegetables into it to soften them. It worked satisfactorily.

As for the Mui Kee fish congee, the porridge itself was nice – smooth and comforting although we did not get much of the fish taste. The pieces of fish were brown – perhaps they were fried first.
