Teuchi Soba Sobashiki Kioicho is a cosy soba restaurant in Akasaka, Tokyo. It is not a famous restaurant and likely to be visited mostly by residents and office workers nearby. The other group of diners would be tourists staying in one of the hotels nearby such as The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, Kitano Hotel or Hotel New Otani.

Soba Restaurant at Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho
Of the three hotels we mentioned earlier, The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho is possibly the most prestigious, a Luxury Collection Hotel. Connected to this hotel is a complex called Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho. It is a commercial complex with offices, shops & restaurants, plus gardens and a historic building. This is a picture of the modern sculpture outside.

The retail part of the complex is not very big, with several restaurants, shops, convenience stores and a supermarket. The high end restaurants are on the higher floors. There are more affordable restaurants on the second floor including Teuchi Soba Sobashiki Kioicho.

Using Google Translate, I realised that the name of the shop literally means “handmade soba noodles” which is the dish that takes centerstage in this restaurant.

Some soba restaurants in Tokyo are very old traditional places. Some are not that old but choose to recreate the look of an old soba restaurant such as Itasoba Kaoriya Ebisu which we wrote about previously. The decor of Teuchi Soba Sobashiki Kioicho is modern Japanese. It has lots of light wood furnishing like traditional restaurants but also incorporated a contemporary touch to make it bright and modern. We like the simple yet inviting feel of the place.

Teuchi Soba Sobashiki Kioicho Menu
Here are pictures of some pages from the restaurant menu. Thankfully they have a version with English “subtitles”. Soba and tempura seem to be a classic combination. We selected the one that featured extra large prawns – lobster shrimp tempura with soba noodles. We also ordered rice with grilled eggplant with miso sauce as well as rolled omelette.

Soba and Tempura at Teuchi Soba Sobashiki

There was a choice of hot or cold soba. We chose the former. Both the soba and tempura items were very good. In particular the tempura prawns. These were much larger than regular tempura prawns and had a pleasant texture. On another visit to this place, we had tried the regular tempura and the normal prawns were not as good.

The omelette was not as fluffy as we would have liked, but nicely flavoured. Similarly the eggplant was good but not outstanding. I think we should stick to the classic soba and tempura combinations at this soba restaurant.
