Dining Place Taipei Marriott: Convenient Restaurant near National Palace Museum

Dining Place Taipei is a Chinese restaurant in the Taipei Marriott Hotel. Its location near the Taipei National Palace Museum made it a suitable and convenient place to have lunch before or after a visit to one of the top attractions of Taiwan.

A Visit to the Taipei National Palace Museum

According to Wikipedia, the museum holds a permanent collection of nearly 700,000 pieces of artifacts and artworks. Permanent exhibitions are rotated regularly and only parts of the museum’s collection can be viewed at a given time. It is a very important and popular attraction in Taipei and a large number of of visitors can be expected. Based on what we could gather, the best time to avoid the crowds at Taipei National Palace Museum is to visit on a weekday afternoon.

Which was what we did. Stopping for lunch at Dining Place Taipei Marriott and then a short ten minute taxi ride to the Museum. There was a very short queue for tickets. Although there was still a large number of visitors, they were spread out such that there was no feeling of congestion. The only mildly crowded places were near the very popular exhibits such as the Jadeite Cabbageย (็ฟ ็މ็™ฝ่œ). But we could still admire the exhibit with sufficient personal space around and see the details (only discovered the grasshopper carved into the cabbage on this visit).

It must be nice to stay in the Taipei Marriott Hotel as there are many restaurants. One of them is the Chinese restaurant simply named as “The Dining Place”. It serves Sichuan, Cantonese and Taiwanese dishes.

The restaurant is poshly furnished with gleaming marble flooring, gold trimmings and plush seats. But there were hardly any ornaments except for the vases of flowers which gave it a more business / conference restaurant feel. A large part of the restaurant is taken up by private rooms. Our lunch was in the public dining hall which was quite small. Our fellow diners were two couples who seemed to be enjoying their retirement by having a leisurely lunch and a group of old friends catching up over lunch. The atmosphere was serene and peaceful. At all times one server stood at a corner and was attentive to any request for service.

Dining Place Taipei Marriott Set Lunch Menu C

With a view to trying out as many dishes as possible we opted for the Dining Place Set Menu C. It was a seven course lunch priced at NT$1,880 per person.

This is a picture of the Menu C. A desktop version of the menu was placed on the table when the first dish was served so we could keep track of the flow of food.

Appetisers, Seafood and Soup

Marimated radish, spicy chicken, salt and pepper pork rib and honey-glazed pork made up the platter of appetisers. The diverse flavours and textures made this an effective appetiser and an interesting start to the meal.

Next were two of the best dishes of the meal. The sautรฉed prawn was fresh and fat while the stewed fish maw soup was delicious. This is a picture of the soup after most of it had been consumed.

The steamed grouper was overcooked and was our least favourite item of the day.

Lunch at Dining Place Taipei Marriott – Meat, Rice and Dessert

Stewed pork spare rib in vinegar sauce (picture above) and steamed glutinous rice with Cantonese sausage ended our meal on a Cantonese note. The glutinous rice was very good.

Finally, some fruits and a steamed black cream paste bun completed the meal, giving us plenty of calories to be burned during our tour of the Taipei National Palace Museum.
