Me Wah Hobart – a top Chinese restaurant in Tasmania

Me Wah Hobart is a Chinese restaurant in the Sandy Bay area of Hobart, Tasmania. We were told that it was one of two top Chinese restaurants in Hobart. The other one is in the casino, which we did not have a chance to try.  Sandy Bay is an area just outside the CBD area which is popular with locals as well as students from the nearby University of Tasmania.  There is a town centre with a cluster of shops and restaurants which is bustling yet has a laid back feel.  It has the vibes that remind us of Holland Village in Singapore.

The entrance to Mei Wah Hobart Chinese restaurant and certain parts of the dining area are very Chinese in character. The stone lions and big vases ensure that no one mistakes it for anything else. There are also Western elements like the extensive wine collection. Some empty bottles still kept on display indicate a taste for fine wine by the diners at this restaurant.

Me Wah Hobart Food

Here are pictures of some pages from the Me Wah Hobart Menu.  We were there on a weekday and so we ordered from the a la carte menu.  I noticed from their website that they have “yum cha” on Saturdays and yum cha with trolleys on Sundays. How traditionally Cantonese!

We ended up ordering an all seafood selection that day.  The spicy salt squid (A$30) was wok fried with long beans. It was mildly and pleasantly spicy with a touch of chilli.

The ginger and shallot scallops (A$45) featured some big juicy scallops lightly fried with ginger & shallots, asparagus and Shao Xing rice wine.   It felt luxurious eating these fat scallops. Like the squid dish, the trimmings and seasoning were kept to a minimum, allowing the seafood to shine.

Our final dish was listed as crab hotpot (A$42) in the menu.  Other than being told that it would be served with noodles (mian xian) we did not know what to expect.   It was a claypot dish of braised crab meat and vermicelli.  Quite an expensive pot of noodles but there were generous amounts of crab meat inside.

Steamed rice was expensive at Me Wah, costing $4 each.  Chinese tea costs A$2.50 per person. Prices are not low at this Hobart Chinese restaurant, but the quality of food was high.
